Hello all,

I am fixing to start my Total Consecration to Mary tomorrow to end on the feast of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel since last time I made the consecration I felt I was not 100% into it but I feel like I need to redo it.

I was wondering, which book should I use for the consecration? I have the following two:
-Preparation for Total Consecration according to St. Louis de Montfort
-33 Days to Morning Glory

I have heard good things about both but I’m just not sure which one I should do.

Thank you and God bless!

Hi landon13,

This is my personal opinion: 33 Days to Morning Glory.

Father Gaitley has geared the Retreat for busy people. Every day readings are 3 to 5 minutes, a one-line prayer for the day, and he uses, what he calls the “Marian Giants” for the readings—St Louis de Montfort, St Maximilian Kolbe, Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta, and St John Paul II.

I don’t want you to think, I’m disparaging St Louis de Montfort’s Total Consecration. I’m not, that method does appeal to a lot of people. However, for me, I tried 4 times to do it, ended up frustrated with the archaic language, the constant page flipping, and very, very long prayers for each day.

God bless you, and the very best Consecration to you.

This is a good point.

I took purposely took more than 90 days to do the 33 day preparation as specified by St. Louis de Montfort. The archaic language can be addressed however, by getting a good translation of his work. I used the one by Tan Books.

If I was to recommend doing the method of St. Louis de Montfort, I would suggest getting Total Consecration to Mary from Tan Books and taking way more than 33 days. Two or three months is not out of the question.

I have made the Consecration to our Blessed Mother more than once over the years, and recently I have become acquainted with “33 Days to Morning Glory”. I think very much of it, and depending on the time available to the person who is making the consecration, they can use more or less of the prayers provided in the back of the book.

In “33 Days to Morning Glory” we have the profound insights of St. Louis de Montfort, St. Maximilian Kolbe, Blessed Mother Teresa, and Saint John Paul II. Each day there is about 2 1/2 pages to ponder, and the subject is presented in a beautiful and inspiring way!

After reading those daily pages, you have a choice of prayers you can add, or choose others that may not be in the book.

The insights of these great Marian saints were very helpful. I have pondered them and have gotten a lot out of them.

Peace!

I used 33 Days to Morning Glory, but I have found St. Louis to be a much better read, more information. So, for myself, I did the consecration using Gaitley, but enrich it with reading from St. Louis.

I would make the consecration according to St. Louis de Montfort, because you would then gain the associated plenary indulgences which may not be obtained by using Fr. Gaitley’s version of the consecration. Though I would certainly encourage 33 Days to Morning Glory as supplementary reading.

You can gain the many indulgences by enrolling in the Association of Mary Queen of All Hearts:

Decree on indulgences: montfort.org.uk/Documents/Decree%20indulgence%2022-05-2001.pdf

On the occasion of the initial consecration (using the De
Montfort formula) or, on the occasion of its renewal, a
PLENARY INDULGENCE is granted, under
the usual conditions (Confession, Communion and prayer
for the intentions of the Holy Father).
Also, a PLENARY INDULGENCE on the following
days:
  1. The day of enrollment in the Confraternity;
  2. Holy Thursday;
  3. Christmas;
  4. Feast of the Annunciation;
  5. Feast of the Immaculate Conception (December 8);
  6. St. Louis de Montfort’s Feast day (April 28);
  7. Every First Saturday of the Month.
Members of the Association also share in the satisfaction,
prayers and good works of the Missionaries of the
Company of Mary.
In answer to a petition by the Montfort Missionaries to the
Sacred Penitentiary in Rome, the above Indulgences have
now been granted in perpetuity to the two Confraternities
(Priests of Mary, Queen of All Hearts AND the
Confraternity of Mary Queen of All Hearts), thus bringing
them in line with the conditions laid down by the new
Enchiridion of Indulgences.
Quite wonderful, it’s it? Anyways, I really do highly recommending looking into this, not only because of all those wonderful indulgences, but also because Total Consecration is a very solemn and serious matter and you will appreciate the spiritual assistance of the Association.

I made my initial consecration with de Montfort.
That was in 2010, then 2011, 2013, and 2014.

2012 I did the 33days. I t was ok for a rare substitute,
but I think the Montfort one is well worth the extra time

I redid the De monfort one and 33 days to Morning Glory at the same time. I enjoyed and got more out of 33 days.

Saint Louis-Marie Grignion de Montfort. It’s classic. It takes a little longer, but it’s well worth it. Because Jesus and Mary are well worth it! 😉 Ad Jesum Per Mariam…wouldn’t want it any other way! 🙂

Peace, Mark
