Many of the parishioners in my church, after praying would like to touch the painting. I’m not sure why, perhaps they think it can transfer some form of spiritual energy to their lives? I’m just guessing here so correct me if I am wrong. Is this some kind of superstition or sin of veneration to dead objects?

Actually, that is not a copy of the painting. The Jesus I trust in you should be below Christ’s feet.

It is a sign of veneration and respect for Christ. I would imagine they were doing it in a manner similar to venerating the relic of a Saint.

You should ask one of the Priests on the site for a better explanation.

The original painting is this one which I personally prefer.

Touching an object?
If I carry a picture of my deceased grandmother with me and occasionally kiss it, am I loving the image or my grandmother? Obviously, my grandmother.

By venerating images, we help our limited human minds to slightly comprehend spiritual realities. We are not venerating the images themselves, but rather that which they stand for.

I would do the same sometimes, I feel it brings me closer to Jesus.

That is veneration, a form of it.

What’s so bad about touching?

e. So Jesus looks like that.
If you read Faustina’s diary she says that she cried after she saw the artist’s rendition, but Jesus told her that it wasn’t the beauty of the colors or the brush of the image but the grace one receives through having trust. because she wa so disappointed many artists have done different renditions based on her description. So it doesn’t matter what image is displayed, it is a personal choice/

Yes, this is how Jesus appeared to St Faustina, the image she had painted.

Pope Francis is always touching paintings and statues , especially of the Virgin Mary .

It’s just part of the prayer , showing love and affection and trust .

My mother always used to touch and sometimes kiss the photo of my dad when he had died . It’s love .

There’s no superstition , simply a desire to connect with one we love , be it Jesus , Mary or a departed loved one .

I see. The connection must be so strong that when you can’t touch the true physical/spiritual body of Mary, you are very content simply by touching her painting. I think I will do it too.
