Ave Maria!

What is the Ash Wednesday ‘Rite’ (if there’s any) before Vatican 2? And what are the traditional practices related to Ash Wednesday?

Thanks!
It’s supposed to include the Lenten exhortation, the Litany of Penance and Psalm 51 (Miserere Mei) which if any parish is worth its salt will sing this to the beautiful setting by Allegri, which gives me goosebumps every time I hear it (check out this link: youtube.com/watch?v=4lC7V8hG198&feature=related). Jesu Lover of my Soul and Lord Jesus think on me would be good hymn choices for OF masses.

There is no day when a low Mass would be permitted but a high Mass forbidden, if that’s what you’re asking. The high Mass, with its sung propers, incense, and so on, is the normative form of the rite.
Yep, that’s what I’m asking. Thanks!

It is the same as today except that the admonition we got has changed. The original admonition was:

“Remember man that thou art dust and to dust thou shalt return”.

I believe that this is still an option but I have not heard this option since the late 60s.
This is what I have always heard at all of my OF parishes.
“Turn away from sin and be faithful to the Gospel”, I think.
I have never heard this.

Really? I’m 26, and that’s the only one I know of from our school Ash Wednesday services.
