Prior to Vatican II when they were somewhat obscured, what were the traditional teachings of the Catholic Church regarding such things as freedom of conscience, democracy, egalitarianism, libertarian principles, etc.?

I don’t believe those things changed as a result of V-II. Rather, certain segments of Catholic culture changed. I mean, there are people today who think the 10 commandments were suggestions. Think about it!

As libertarianism is based on reason alone, is hostile to tradition as well as to conservative principles and relies on mere contractual obligations to structure society I believe the church would not favor it.

But I can’t speak authoritatively on this. I have no doubt Catholic scholars have.
