Hello! A friend of mine will be visiting San Antonio in a few weeks and he’s wondering if there is a good “traditional” parish near the airport where he will be staying. He won’t have a car so will need to use a hotel shuttle, so it can’t be too far from the airport.

Any suggestions?

I don’t really know the area, but you could try Our Lady of the Atonement Catholic Church, Anglican Use. It is very traditional, but not TLM/EF. It would probably be worth while to see the liturgy of the Anglican Use.

Vthe actual address is on Kentucky but it is on a several bus routes, not terribly close to the airport but on the west side.

Thank you!!! 😃 I think most hotel shuttles will go something like three miles away, so if it’s further than that he may have to get a taxi. But I will certainly pass this along!

Lovely!!! I love seeing an EF Mass like that! Reminds me of my own parish.

Is this one by the airport? He’s not going to be able to go too far from there.

This is the parish I posted about in Post #2. It is an Anglican Use parish and they offer the Latin Mass at ,I believe, 5:00 PM on Sundays.

The earlier Masses are the Anglican Use ones and just as beautiful.

I still haven’t learned how to actually put the website in, so in my post I just gave you the name of the website.

As I think I mentioned I don’t know how far it is from the airport.

God Bless

Their Latin Mass is not the Traditional Mass.

Their Latin Mass is not the Traditional Mass.
I know that. They did have the TLM, however the people who came to it started some problems and the Bishop stopped the Pastor from celebrating it.

So he used the next best option he could for those who wanted a Latin Mass.

Also the Anglican Use liturgy, although in English, sometimes with some Latin, it depends of the muscial setting does use Latin. At this time the AU liturgy is very similar to the TLM, with the Anglican traditional prayers. After the Ordinariate is established, hopefully Rome will allow a liturgy closer to the Anglican Missal, which when including the Gregorian Canon is almost exactly like the TLM. With full participation of the congregation.

You can see the one they were given by Rome on the website under the parishes name.

There are many traditional Catholics who are supporting the Ordinariate as it allows them another choice of liturgies if they have no TLM parishes to attend.

I heard it was the pastor that had the problem.
You have no idea of the truth. The Pastor is a wonderful priest. I go on a Traditional website and have seen the attitude of many there. Although they are the minority, most find fault with everyone, whether the Pope, Bishop or layperson who does not agree with them.

Instead of taking gossip from some, why don’t you go directly to the Pastor and ask him what happened.

Thank God for priests like him who actually run their parishes and take care of their members and treat them equally. I assume you belong to SSPX, at least that is how your response came across. As I said you need to hear from the Pastor himself on why he no longer celebrates the TLM.

Ok - confession time - we were the ones going away for a few days, not it’s not something I like to advertise that my house is going to be empty for nearly a week. :o

So we ended up going to St. Mary’s, right on the Riverwalk. We didn’t have a car, and since we were spending our days down there anyway it just worked out. We did a daily Mass on Saturday and also noon on Sunday. It is a very beautiful Church inside, and the Mass was a very nice and reverent NO.

Thanks everyone for all your suggestions - we really did have a hard time deciding where to go, but in the end circumstances and convenience won out, still we were happy with where we ended up. After all - it’s still Jesus.

Just to make sure Fr. Christopher Phillips’ name isn’t tarnished here…

I used to be a parishioner at Our Lady of the Atonement whilst I was attending dental school. I asked Fr. Phillips, once, about the TLM, and he talked to me about that situation. Some traditionalists can be picky and negative about how a priest tries to say the TLM. I imagine it can be frustrating for a priest- even for one as solid as Fr. Phillips. He studied his way into the Church as an Episcopal minister, embraced Humanae Vitae as a married man, setup the flagship parish for the Pastoral Provision under JPII, and has been devoted to his parish ever since his ordination. He was organ scholar at his college and would tolerate nothing less than the best from the polyphonic choir at OLOTA (I know, I was in it). The Masses there were always done with utmost solemnity, the vestments were beautiful, and Fr. would chant everything. In short, he had a deep desire for reverent liturgy, so he wasn’t sloppy at the altar. Even so, some of the attendees at the TLM created problems that regrettably resulted in the TLM project being abandoned.

They do offer a reverent NO Mass in Latin, but it is the Anglican Use High Mass that is the crowning jewel of the parish.

However, as Fr. Phillips would say, EVERY Mass is special. What a guy.
