'traditional' religious orders

are they doing better in terms of number of vocations than more ‘modern’ orders? I’m just curious if anyone knows! are more people drawn to them?

btw when I say ‘traditional’, I mean…for example if they’re nuns: they wear the habit and the veil, pray the Liturgy of the Hours, etc…

I hope it makes sense what I’m trying to say, lol.

Fidelity to the Magisterium; community life and prayer; habit–those are the communities who are bursting at the seams with vocations.

Those who don’t have that are struggling. Some have said that they’re there to “turn off the lights.” Others, who have a habit provision in their rule, are receiving vocations from those who desire to wear a habit.

If you look at the website of the Institute on Religious Life, they have a small membership, as does the Council of Major Superiors of Women Religious, but those communities are the ones who are receiving the vocations.

I know, for me, I am looking at only traditional Carmelite orders who wear the full habit with the wimple, mantle and the long veil. Fortunately, I’ve been able to find orders like this who wear the full habit but are still loyal to the Church. One such order is the Valparaiso Carmel, which I’ve heard is getting some new vocations. They celebrate the EF Mass, pray the Liturgy 7 times a day, and wear the full habit and veil. They are a 1990 Constitution Carmel, which is more traditional and closer to what St. Teresa of Avila wanted in her Reform.

I used to be looking at just Discalced Carmelite orders who had a habit, whether it was full or modified, but I discovered that the one I was looking at the most (Savannah Carmel) was a little too modernized. Their numbers are very small and they have had to take women from Kenya in order to increase their numbers. In fact, the 2 nuns that are already there have already been clothed in the habit, which makes me think that they transferred from another Carmel. When Sr. Joann (Prioress) told me that they were coming, I thought they were going to be postulants. Since finding out they weren’t, I realized they haven’t had a new vocation in years. All the nuns are 20+ years older than me. So I stopped discerning with them. (they are 1991 Constitution’s Carmel, which is more modern than the 1990)

Carmel of Clinton Township is a very fine 1991 Carmel. They wear the full habit.

Sorry! Didn’t realize I forgot the “s” LOL. Clinton Township already turned me down. I spoke with their Prioress through an email and she asked me why I was interested in Carmel. I guess I worded it wrong or something, but she told me that I did not appear to have a genuine vocation (after one email, and no “in-person” visits). Needless to say, I have no interest in them. I thought that was inappropriate…😦

But I feel God is calling me to the Carmelites and I am leaning towards visiting the Sheffield Carmel. I know it’s a stretch because I live in FL, and it would mean that my parents would have to travel over the Atlantic to see me, but I feel really drawn to that place through their website. I would love to visit the Arlington Carmel too. I received literature from Mother Maria, and that place, though it is a 1991 Const. Carmel, it is very traditional with the double grilles and turn. I don’t know why it’s a 1991. Everything about them reeks of tradition. LOL.

Probably “not sufficiently detached.” She and I went over this a couple of weeks ago.

Where are you located? If you’re used to warm weather, I would suggest Arlington. British winters take some acclamation–just keep that in mind.

I’m sorry, are you talking about the Clinton Township Carmel’s decision when you say “not sufficiently detached”? If so, what does that mean? :confused: When I asked her why or how she came to her conclusion (nicely), she emailed me back saying that she believe I was called elsewhere. So, when she emailed me the first time, I guess she believed that I didn’t have a vocation at that particular Carmel. I have since accepted it although I believe that their discernment process should not progress this way. I had no idea that they’d make their decision without seeing the person. She said she showed what I wrote to the Novice Mistress and they came to the conclusion together. I have tried not to question it too much because the first community that I was interested in that turned me away turned out to be a “renegade” order and is not in Full Communion with Rome (something I did not know at the time). So I accept that God is calling me somewhere else.

As far as the Sheffield Carmel, I am from FL so I have no idea how I will cope with the winters, but I have not visited it, so I have no idea if I am called there or not. I want to visit Arlington the most. Mother Maria is really sweet. Their cloister is beautiful! They don’t have pictures on their website, but I received a magazine for their aspirants that they sent me with pictures. It’s gorgeous 🙂 I love how small and simple the cloister is. I have started reading “The Way of Perfection” by St. Teresa and I love what she says about small cloisters. She says that all houses will tumble to the ground (as in Revelation), and her cloisters should not make a loud clamor. I think the Arlington Carmel lives up to that. 🙂

Later on today, I will try to upload some pictures from the Arlington Carmel magazine. The nuns are so joyful in all the pictures. I love that they wear the full habit 😃
