After listening to the Pope on TV I wondered if ,historically speaking, a Pope writes their own public speeches when visiting other countries?

I am sorry for asking a ridiculous question. I was not sure if anyone could help me with this question at RCIA tonight :o

No modern head of state writes his own speeches. He gives a rough outline to a speech-writer who composes the actual speech. It may go through a number of revisions before the speech is finally given. [Edited by Moderator]

According to this article, yes, Benedict XVI does write his own speeches.

The article notes that JPII often used a speech writer.

I don’t know about “traditionally” but prior to TV and worldwide media, it’s unlikely the Pope used a speech writer… but then again, they would have given far fewer speeches to much smaller audiences.

Yeah, that is what I was thinking in regards to worldwide media. Just look at how things get blown out of proportion that is why I asked. Thanks
