Can someone translate this act of contrition into church Latin? Or point me to a website that has the translation?

O my God,
I am sorry and beg pardon for all my sins,
and detest them above all things,
because they deserve Thy dreadful punishments,
because they have crucified my loving Saviour Jesus
Christ,
and most of all because they offend Thine infinite
goodness;
and I firmly resolve,
by the help of Thy grace,
never to offend Thee again,
and carefully to avoid the occasions of sin.

This is the authorized form for England. I can’t find the Latin translation of it anywhere. If you translate it for me, please to be sure somehow indicate the accent marks…maybe by using a capital letter, or altering the color of the letter.

Deus meus, ex toto corde poenitet me omnium meorum peccatorum, eaque detestor, quia peccando, non solum poenas a Te iuste statutas promeritus sum, sed praesertim quia offendi Te, summum bonum, ac dignum qui super omnia diligaris. Ideo firmiter propono, adiuvante gratia Tua, de cetero me non peccaturum peccandique occasiones proximas fugiturum.
Amen

Catholig,

Are you sure that’s the translation of the version I posted? I don’t see “Jesus Christ” anywhere in it.

O My God, from my whole heart I am sorry of all my sins, and I detest them, because by sinning not only have I merited the penalties justly established by Thee, but most of all because I offended thee, the highest good, and [most] worthy [you] who above all should be loved (?). Therefore I firmly propose, by thy gracious helping,

That’s my own translation - unfortunately I couldn’t get all the rest of the prayer.

Deus meus,
poenitet me omnium meorum peccatorum,
et postulo indulgentiam pro iis,
eaque detestor super omnium,
quia merent poenas tuas,
quia crucifixerunt salvatorem meum clementem Iesum Christum,
sed praesertim quia offendunt bonitatem tuam infinitam;
Ideo firmiter propono,
auxiliante gratia tua,
iterum non offendare te,
et sollicite a peccadi occasionibus promixis fugere.

Okay, since you wanted that particular act of contrition translated I did it to the best of my capabilities.

Wow, I wish I could.

I did a search on key phrases as well as “Act of Contrition” and “latin” and came up with this site . It has the prayer you typed above at the bottom right of the page. At the top right corner of the page, there is a link to translate these prayers into different languages. One of the options is Latin. However, I get a 404 error (page not found) when I clicked on the link.

So, I went to the Internet Archive and tried to look up cached, or saved pages. Unfortunately, none of those pages which have been saved contain the Latin form of the particular Act of Contrition you’re seeking.

My last idea would be to ask someone here to translate it (which, as I read above, you already have). Or, contact the webmaster who has linked his/her address at the bottom right of the page here.

Edited to thank catholicg for a great translation. I was 3 minutes too late and a language short.

It looks like you were on the right track. If you look at the URLs for the different languages you will see that the Latin translation with the 404 error is to a different site than the rest - possibly an older version of the site.

By experimenting I found the following
santamariaelx.com/bsm_or_la.htm

James

Edit: It is the Latin version but doesn’t seem to have the translation of that particular prayer.

Does the Catholic church in England still officially show preference for the archaic English versions of the prayers (thou, thee, etc)? I’ve found that here in the U.S. it’s becoming increasingly hard to find prayer cards and pamphlets with these versions - instead they tend to use you/your. The Our Father being the notable exception, it never ever appears in modern English.

Sorry if this goes off topic a bit.
