I don’t know if any of you listen to the Christian talk show “Truth Talk Live” with Stu Epperson. It’s syndicated from North Carolina and comes on live every day at 5 pm Eastern time. It’s on WAYL - 91.9 FM in Northeast Florida.

The host Stu Epperson is an Evangelical Protestant who usually takes on issues that don’t pit one denomination against another and his shows are usually pretty good. However, he sometimes slips into Catholic bashing with his guests and lets callers rant and rave the usual anti-Catholic rhetoric.

I call in often when there is a Catholic topic and try to correct misunderstandings. I’ve also had a number of off-the-air conversations with Stu where we’ve discussed the Eucharist, Mary, purgatory, Solo Scriptura, etc.

The problem is that whenever a Catholic “expert” is on the show, they get beat up pretty bad either because they aren’t an expert, they’re extremely liberal, or they just don’t do “sound bite” arguments very well.

Anyway, today’s show is going to address “communion”, Consubstantiation, and Transubstantiation. I don’t know who the guest will be, but I’m pretty sure it won’t be a well-equipped Catholic apologist. Stu believes, and will likely put forth, that our interpretation of John 6 is basically flawed and has been shown be so by “all the reputable Protestant scholars.”

If any of you can get the show on a local radio station, listen and call in. If not, go to the website truthtalklive.com/ and listen there. We need to make a good showing and represent the Church’s position accurately and charitably.

I’d love to help, but I’m on the train ride home at that point. I also don’t know if I’m knowledgeable enough yet to try and defend the Faith on the radio.

I’ll say a Rosary for you though while I’m on the train :o

That would be awesome. Also, thanks for responding. 👍

I listened to the program for a bit today. I found it as usual. I have listened to it over the years now and then. I have found errors and Emailed him corrections in the Catholic beliefs that were put forward by either him or others on the program. I never received any response. I was tempted to call in several times, but if you listen carefully. You will notice that he has his hand on the button and when painted into a corner he will simply cut you off. I have also noticed that the other persons microphone suddenly gets turned down so his voice over powers what the other person is saying.

Jim,

I listen to the show fairly often. I’ve heard you call in quite a few times as well. You should hear me in the car routing for you. I’ve often wanted to call in but like the Br. said above it is nearly pointless. But your right, even if he cuts us off I’ll call in just to show that Catholics aren’t the ignorantly lost fools he often makes us out to be.

So Jim, how’d it go? Did my prayers help out? 🙂

I wish I could have listened, but I leave work at 5pm and my commute on the subway is an hour and a half.

I was pleasantly surprised. I was given plenty of time to debate his guest - a biblical scholar who works with the Dead Sea scrolls. The host, Stu Epperson, was amazingly fair and objective. Based on what he has said on recent shows, he has apparently been visiting the CA website and getting correct information about Catholicism and seems to be taking a more conciliatory approach to Catholics.

I think I threw them off a bit because instead of going with John 6 or the Gospels, I focused on I Cor. 11:23-30. I emphasized verse 23 where Paul states, “I received from the Lord…” They weren’t prepared for that approach and since Evangelicals hold Paul in such high esteem, I’d like to think that it made them think a bit.

The guest then got off on a tangent and revealed something about his beliefs that I don’t think the host even agreed with. He said that he believed that communion can be celebrated by anyone, even alone, using any food or beverage. He actually stated that he felt that you could use water and crackers and it would have the same meaning - a meaning that he acknowledged was profound to believers. It was bizarre.

Anyway, being an amateur, I was satisfied. My kids were listening in the next room and were fired up. If all I accomplished was to show them a good example, I couldn’t be more gratified.

I felt the prayer cover - the Holy Spirit was with me. Thank you brother, and God bless you.

Jim
