My wife is having a hard time with the premenopausal hot flashes. Are there any treaments that are ok with the church?

I use flax seed oil, it helps keep them under control and is natural. At present I take 1000mg a day, but look up what is recommended. It also helps with the Omega 3,6,9s and dry eyes. Good luck to her (and thank you for helping her out)

My MIL uses black cohosh ( a brand name is Remifemin). It seems to work well for her. It helped her go from 12+ hot flashes per day to 1-3 each day.

Hot flashes are definitely not fun, and you are a very caring husband for trying to find good solutions for your wife!

There’s a brand of pajamas and nightgowns called “Cool Sets” that I discovered is terrific for night sweats (hot flashes while sleeping). They can be ordered at www.coolsets.com, and I have five different types from the company in varying styles - all terrific! They’re made out of a special “moisture wicking” material that’s nice and cool. I wouldn’t even try to sleep in anything else anymore. Might make a great gift idea to give her! A good night’s sleep is a blessing beyond compare.

I also use Flax Seed Oil (in gel tablet form, three times a day with meals), but I don’t know if it has helped much or not with the flashes. It’s supposed to be healthy for other reasons, too, so I’ll keep using it along with all the other things I do to be more comfortable!

I also found that the new mattresses that either have a special foam “topper” or are completely made of foam (like Tempurpedic) are horrible if you get hot flashes at night. The foam absorbs your body heat and makes sleeping unbearable, even on cool nights. If you ever decide to get a new mattress, be careful not to choose one of those if you can help it! I learned the hard way…

Wearing layers during the day helps, too. She can always remove an outer top or sweater when a hot flash comes on if she has a cooler blouse underneath.

I refused to use the hormone pills that the doctor thought might help. Not sure what the Church’s guidance is on those, but I do know that there are major documented health concerns and ramifications with them, and there’s no way I would take a chance with that just to be cooler.

The good news is the flashes usually lessen a bit after a few years, but everyone is different. Best wishes to you and your wife in the quest for cooler days and nights!

Thank you for the information. I will pass it on to her and hope it will help. She made an appointment to see a doctor also and we will see what she has to offer.

I use one of these to cool down the mattress at night: ChiliPad - it’s specifically recommended for hot flashes and they make one with two temperature zones so that you and your wife can both be comfortable. It really works.

A classy hand fan. I have a sandlewood one from Chinatown in San Francisco and I bought a Blessed Mother one online, for church. Moving to the North Pole isn’t an option with the rest of my family. :snowing:

when your wife is near a source of heat this will trigger off the hot flushes i think as that is what happened with me. I was put through the menopause at the age of 23 by doctors chemicly to treat a disease i have called endometriosis and it was terrible not to say i put my husband through torture unintentionaly as my emotions were up and down. Like you he helped me and was a star. I am happy to see that you are looking after your wife. The best thing that she can do is see your GP for advice that is what i did and i got therapy and yes church approved tablets that helped me tramendusly. Good luck to you sir. God bless.

My wife has seen a doctor who is open to all treatments. She started on a progesterone cream and it has been helping after only 2 weeks. 🙂

“geovet” and all… I’ve heard that some of the natural remedies… can cause weight gain. I think I heard this, about black cohosh… but I can’t remember for sure. So… please inquire about this possible side effect, if it’s important to you.

As our female hormones decline, we tend to put on a little weight anyway… so, the last thing that I want is a “remedy” that’s going to cause me to gain even more weight. :bigyikes:

Make sure you ask questions about what you’re taking, ladies!

God bless.
MV 🙂

(“geovet” you’re a good guy, helping your wife out like this. 🙂 )
