Gloria Patri, et Filio, et Spiritui Sancto!
We put a new twist on Trick or Treatin’ tonight. You can see in the pics below that my son dressed as a vested priest. If you don’t know, he’ wearing the Roman fiddleback vestment, which my mother made for him.
Instead of the usual “trick or treat”, my son told everyone, “Dominus vobiscum.” It was so funny watching the reaction from people. “Huh?, Excuse me?, What’d you say?” Many, in fact, stayed completely silent…totally caught off guard. One person did respond immediately, “et cum spiritu tuo.” Needless to say, I was surprised. So I responded, singing, “ite missa est.” Don’t ask me why…its the first thing I thought of.
Our parish is in the neighborhood, and there’s a convent on the grounds with a couple nuns living in it. They stumbled through “et cum spiritu tuo.” I could see it had been a while since they said it.
So many people, after my son would say “thank you” and turn to walk away, would say, “oh, he’s a priest.” Sometimes I over-think things, and thought, “How appropriate. All too often we only recognize things after those things have left us, much like blessings from the Lord.”
Anyway, I think this was a great way to evangelize by example. If only I could have told each person, “Yes, the Catholic faith is very much alive, active and relevant. Come join us.”
