Gloria Patri, et Filio, et Spiritui Sancto!

We put a new twist on Trick or Treatin’ tonight. You can see in the pics below that my son dressed as a vested priest. If you don’t know, he’ wearing the Roman fiddleback vestment, which my mother made for him.

Instead of the usual “trick or treat”, my son told everyone, “Dominus vobiscum.” It was so funny watching the reaction from people. “Huh?, Excuse me?, What’d you say?” Many, in fact, stayed completely silent…totally caught off guard. One person did respond immediately, “et cum spiritu tuo.” Needless to say, I was surprised. So I responded, singing, “ite missa est.” Don’t ask me why…its the first thing I thought of.

Our parish is in the neighborhood, and there’s a convent on the grounds with a couple nuns living in it. They stumbled through “et cum spiritu tuo.” I could see it had been a while since they said it.

So many people, after my son would say “thank you” and turn to walk away, would say, “oh, he’s a priest.” Sometimes I over-think things, and thought, “How appropriate. All too often we only recognize things after those things have left us, much like blessings from the Lord.”

Anyway, I think this was a great way to evangelize by example. If only I could have told each person, “Yes, the Catholic faith is very much alive, active and relevant. Come join us.”

Cool! You have a cute son, hope he will be a priest 😃
At the school he goes to (Catholic), the kids were allowed to wear their costumes. The principal asked him if he was a bishop. He responded, “I’m a Latin priest.” Right now he knows the Signum Crucis, the Pater Noster and the first half of the Ave Maria. Not too bad considering his first exposure to Latin and the Latin Mass was on Easter Sunday of this year.

BTW, I’m so proud of him. He just got his first quarter report card: straight A’s and First Honors.

That would’ve made my night if I had a little traditional priest come up and say “Dominus Vobiscum”. My response would’ve been…very enthusiastic, I probably would’ve scared your son!

Sounds like you’re doing a good job! Maybe someday he’ll be putting on real vestements 👍

He’s always been easily frightened by scarey images like masks and such. But that night I stressed to him that Christ was with him, that Christ defeated the demons and that Christ would never let anything happen to him. Well, he took the draculas, grim reapers, Scarey Movie-face guys, zombies and all the other devilish trick-or-treaters with the utmost confidence in God. We survived without a single wimper.

Oh, how cute! 🙂 I like how he is even wearing a maniple.
You’re the first one to comment on the maniple. Thanks for noticing. I think the only thing he was missing was the stole, and, of course, the formal ordination.

One of my friends moved out to Washington State. Her son entered public school–he had been homeschooled. The Catholic school in her area was very liberal–teaching heresy. So, they put him in public school. The first Halloween, he went as a priest. The kids called him a child molester. 😦

After that, he didn’t want to go to school or to be a priest any longer.

Isn’t that sad?

They moved to Denver not long ago, and he’s been homeschooled again.

May God be with you!

I dressed up like one of the Three Wise Men and answered the door…

I am Melchior;
A Wiseman from the East.
I seek the Messiah!

The kids were pretty good although they didn’t know what to say. One child did say he thought he was by the north star!!

I always say God bless you after I’ve given them candy.

And God bless you!
