Tridentine mass question!

Greetings:

I went to my second ever TLM and noticed that the altar servers lifted the celebrants chausable (or whatever it was) during the elevation of the host and chalice. What is the significance of this practice, and why was it discarded in the novus ordo mass? Also I notice that the penitential “I confess to Almighty God…” was after communion. All of that aside, I must conclude that it was a gorgeous service, and I wish it was available in my neck of the woods. Even though my knees are sore now!

Back in the Middle Ages, the priests had heavier and longer vestments, and so the deacon and subdeacon would live the chasuble up during the elevation to help the priest elevate the Host and the Chalice. The tradition has continued to the present day, but since the vestments are not so heavy, it’s merely a tradition and part of the Mass, but not actually necessary. (Incidentally, the rubrics insist that the servers are not to show the priest’s hindquarters when this is done)

As to the Third Confiteor, another more knowledgeable poster may be able to answer that.

it might be said the there are three confiteors in the mass. the first by the priest, the second by the alter boy, who adds the words “and to you father” following the words, "peter, paul and to all the saints. the third recited by the server following the priest receiving the sacred host and before the minor elevation.
the third confiteor was dropped in the 1962 missal which many felt was in error as revised by cardinal bugnini (sp?). have a good year. (alih)

The third Confiteor is before the people’s Communion and the Ecce Agnus Dei (often, the term “minor elevation” is used in connection with the raising of the host at the “Per ipsum” that concludes the Canon.

The argument against the third Confiteor (which, as was mentioned, was dropped in the 1962 missal), was that a Confiteor was already recited at the beginning of the Mass. One of the reasons that the Confiteor was said before Communion was that the rite of the Ritual for the distribution of Holy Communion outside Mass was virtually transplanted into the missal after the priest’s Communion (therefore, the older rubrics also contained instructions for the priest not to do such-and-such that would customarily be done if Communion was distributed outside Mass).

Those not in favour of this omission point out that technically the dual Confiteor at the beginning of Mass is part of the priest’s private preparation. The argument does have merit, except for the fact that, at least in the last century, and especially in “low Masses” (i.e. no chanting) it is never treated as “private”, per se, but closely followed by those attending Mass. In popular regard and practise, therefore, it is more “public”.
