I was hoping for some help. Being somewhat of a new Catholic I’m confused, I’ve been invited to a Tridentate Mass. So I have a few questions. 1. How is a Tridentine Mass different? 2. As a Roman Catholic can I go and receive Holy Communion? 3. Is a Tridentate Mass in line with the Pope? 4. As a Roman Catholic what different Rites can we attend?

Kat:

Although I do not know much about the Tridentine Mass, here is what I know based on your questions:

1: The Tridentine Mass is the Mass before Vatican II. The basic sections of the Mass arre the same only different format. Most of it is in Latin. This may help you on the flow: unavoce.org/ttmass.htm (If anyone has a better site for the structure, please post it).

2: Yes, providing:
  • It is not performed by a group not in communion with Rome (i.e. the SSPX). For valid and licit places celebrating the Tridentine Mass, check: latinmass.org/directory.html
  • The same rules about being in a state of grace.
3: Yes it is.

4: We can attend all rites as long as they are in communion with Rome. This includes the Eastern Rite Catholics (as opposed to Eastern Orthodox) such as the Byzantine and Ukranian Catholic.

I hope this helps.

There are a few more that are not on the list yet.

Phoenix at St. Thomas the Apostle and Detroit has just added one too.

Usually you can also check to see if the parish shows up on the Diocese web site for Tridentine Masses. I don’t know if there is a directory for Eastern Rite vs Orthodox though.

Oh - just a couple of other minor things Kat.

Communion is received only kneeling and only on the tongue and you don’t say Amen.

Hope you find it as beautiful as I do.

Luckily, there is a local parish that does the Tridentine service and I am going for the first time tomorrow morning. I am so, so excited. I will let everyone know how it goes.

Yes, please do. I always like to hear of people’s first impressions of the Tridentine Mass.

I’m all for the Kneeling and on the tougue, I’m currious as to why you would not say Amen?
I’ll be letting you know what I think when I go. Latter this month!

Thanks Kat

I know on Mass Times, the Easter Rites are listed with parenthesis () after the parish name. If it has brackets ] it means it is an Ethnic Parish under the Latin Rite.

This is a great site and pretty current. This is the only one I have seen the Tridentine Mass in Phoienix listed (we have only had it since June) at St. Thomas the Apostle.

I am sure with this list, you can be sure if the one you ae attending is valid then. Thanks
