Tridentine Masses in the Diocese of Arlington VA?

I have heard that the Diocese of Arlington Virginia is one of two Latin Rite Dioceses in the United States that do not allow female altar servers:thumbsup: (Lincoln Nebraska being the other Diocese that does not allow female altar servers:thumbsup: ).

However, I have also heard that the Diocese of Arlington does not allow the Tridentine Mass to be celebrated there.

Does anybody know why? This seems rather puzzling to me.

There isn’t anything puzzling, if you know geography. Arlington is a suburb of Washington DC which does have Latin mass available. Since it is just a short Metro trip away, why take a priest off of regular duty needlessly?

I, too, wish that Bishop Loverde would permit the Tridentine Rite mass to be said somewhere in the Arlington Diocese. My wife and I attend St. Andrew the Apostle Parish in Clifton, where Latin Mass in the Novus Ordo rite is said each Sunday at 10:30 am, and each Wednesday evening at 7:30 pm.

I have sought an answer to your question myself. Our pastor, Father Jerome Fasano (an absolutely fabulous, orthodox priest–pray for him!!) simply told me that Bishop Loverde has consistently refused to grant an Indult for the Rite to be celebrated. He refused to comment further, and I don’t blame him for not saying more. I know several people who are personally familiar with Bishop Loverde and, while I cannot take their opinion as gospel (so to speak), they are unanimous in believing that Bishop Loverde’s prime motivation for most of his decisions is to avoid controversy like the plague.

I would like to explore this further, as my experience with the Tridentine Rite is a wonderful one. Mass should be glorious and joyous and anything but pedestrian. Post a reply if you are interested.

Maybe you should get together a select group of people, all of whom:

1. Do NOT support anything schismatic(such as SSPX), or otherwise disloyal in the least(not even Una Voce).

and

1. Love the Tridentine Mass.

Maybe such a group could approach Bishop Loverde and ask for the Tridentine Mass.

I know that I personally have been turned off by many Tridentine Mass supporters who are schismatic and/or disloyal.

The answer isn’t as clear as your reasoning tries to make it. First, the diocese is much larger than the city of Arlington. It covers northern Virginia. If a “short Metro trip” includes a few hours in the car, you’re correct. If not, there are probably individuals who could not avail themselves of the D.C. indult.

Second, one musn’t necessarily eliminate a regular Mass or pull a priest in order to offer an indult. There are other ways around it.

My own, entirely unfounded, speculation is that the bishop refuses to allow an indult because he wants to “reform the reform.” He’ll let things be done “traditionally” but only insofar as they fit in the modern liturgical framework. (Here I’m up against a wall regarding kneeling for communion, since it is clearly allowed by the CDW yet he refused to let students at Christendom College do it - unless he’s rescinded that prohibition since the CDW’s clarification came out). If he just let people do things the old way, he probably worries he would have less support for doing things right the new way. It’s just a guess.

Im loyal and love the tridentine mass. I live in the Diocese.

Diocese of Arlington parishoners and priests please post here If you want to wright a joint letter to the bishop. We could deliver it together, in person, at one of his masses. Particularly if the youth show up I think the Bishop would be touched. To have a true reform of the reform Pope Benedict says we need to re-discover the spirit of the tridentine mass.

Here is an idea for a letter,

Your Excellency, Most Reverend Bishop Paul S. Loverde,

We would like to extend our grateful and heartfelt appreciation for the reverent and solemn atmosphere of Masses celebrated in the Diocese of Arlington. Whether or not you are aware there are many Catholics who flock to this diocese for that very reason. In the diocese of Arlington the “Reform of the Reform” called for by Pope Benedict XVI is being effectively carried out. However many of those who come to the parishes of this Diocese come because it more closely resembles the Tridentine Mass. Many Catholics who are faithful to the magisterium in our area desire the Tridentine Mass in the manner provided for by Pope John Paul the great in Ecclesia Dei.

We are those Catholics who are absolutely loyal to the Holy Spirit through the Pope and the Bishops in union with him, but desire the Rite of Mass which inspired so many of the Latin Rite saints from St. Ignatius of Loyola to St. Jose Maria Escriva. We totally and whole heartedly reject the so called traditionalists like the SSPX who disdain the Second Vatican Council which was inspired by the Holy Spirit.

The Tridentine Rite of Mass would be a means of fulfilling Pope John Paul’s desire to fulfill the “rightful aspirations” of the faithful. It would also be a unique means of carrying out the “new evangelization” he called for. One signer of this letter is a young Catholic who has invited many friends to Holy Mass. These friends love to come to Mass because of its beauty. Beauty attracts. The father of one friend comes to the Pauline Rite Mass in Latin every chance he gets because he recognizes it as being in continuity with the traditions of the early Church. The Tridentine Mass would also attract these same Protestant friends to Mass. Your Excellency, every opportunity to show them the beauty of Jesus in the Eucharist is an opportunity we must take!

Your Excellency, we ask you to please consider offering the Tridentine Mass in some parishes of the Diocese. We believe it would be a beautiful testament to the continuity, and the unity of the Catholic Church.
