I have been married for some time now and I have been through so much. I don’t know how much longer I can endure this. I’ve spent a decade of my life being severely bullied growing up. I then married and spent another decade living with an alcoholic man who wouldn’t help himself. One or another of my children has been extremely difficult for the last decade. My husband has left the faith a few years ago and left me a ‘church widow’ alone with my large family. Now one of my children has left the faith also. I have tremendous guilt and sadness. My husband always seems to get his way with arguments and how we raise our children. My future is very grim. I’m struggling with depression and a very weak faith, and somehow I’m supposed to lift up the entire family.

I’m not suicidal, but I sure wish God could spare a child from cancer and take my life instead. If only He could promise me that I won’t end up in hell, but at this time, I can’t really imagine a greater sadness than this. I truly regret getting married in the church and having children. I never was in any way mentally capable of handling children, but I was too blind and in love to see that at the time. I feel so trapped and alone.

Please pray for me!!!

I am so sorry for your struggles. I, too, have a husband who left the faith many years ago, forcing me to “step up” as the spiritual leader for our large family (we have 8 children, 7 of whom still live at home). I’ve been praying for dh to come back to the Church daily for nearly 15 years now. It is not an easy place to be, but please know that you are not alone.

In addition, if at all possible, please see your doctor and/or a counselor/therapist for an evaluation. They may be able to help you learn some techniques and give you some tools that will help you through the struggles. Some of the things you said and the way you worded things suggests to me that you may not have the skills or tools you need to cope with these difficulties alone, and even if nothing else changed, I think simply learning methods to cope with these particular stresses in your life will help you to be happier and more hopeful in general.
If you cannot see a counselor, at least talk with a priest or religious to help guide you and pray for you on a regular basis. And, if at all possible, make frequent use of the Sacraments. I have found that when my prayer life and spiritual life are in order, the rest of my life is much easier to handle, even when things are going wrong.

I was once in a bad situation like yourself ,
Perhaps not as servere but 21 years of a bad marriage …
Just wish to say , things can change ,
I have met a much better person to share my life with …
No one can tell you what to do , but only give suggestions,
I have a couple which I can’t put on here
 
Please run, not walk, to an Al-Anon meeting. This program saved my life and helped me find God. It did not get the alcoholic husband to stop drinking, but it showed me a sane way to live in those circumstances. It is not a religious program, but is spiritual, does not contradict Catholic beliefs (in fact, I know some priests who are in the program), and is completely anonymous. There are groups virtually everywhere and at any time, and you can usually find information from the phone book. If it were not for God leading me to Al-anon, I most likely would have done myself in.

I will pray for you. I know how hard your life is–been there and done that.

I just want to clarify that my husband is not currently abusing alcohol. I tried for years to encourage him to go to AlAnon, that proved rather pointless… He kept refusing to go. He’s clean now, but after blaming my depression in the past for his drinking, I’m always afraid he’s going to resume his old ways.

I’ve been given a new type of antidepressants and I’m really scared of how my body will react to them. I’ve had some really bad experiences with others in the past. The psych says that’s what I need, as well as therapy. I just don’t see how any of this is going to work. Yeah, the pills may lift my depression. They will do nothing for repairing this rift between us. We’ll need counseling. Hubby won’t go to Marriage Encounter or Retrouvaille. Trust me, I’ve begged for that too. So, we’re stuck seeing a counselor with liberal views (I don’t know of any Christian counselors in the region and I know he wouldn’t go anyway). I already have my husband and daughter positioned against me. What if this “neutral” third party pits against me too? Just more fuel for the fire…

I’m so sick of hearing that I just need to tolerate my daughter’s lapse of faith. I’m trying my very best to be respectful of our differences. I don’t attack her. If I speak about my faith, however, it always ends up in a big fight and him ultimately making me feel bad for being a Catholic. Tolerance, people push that so much. But don’t expect to be tolerated if you’re Christian…

Prayers said for your intentions and for the Medical Doctors that might be seen (if needed) in the future. It is nice to have already prayed for the Drs. (Our Lord knows who they are even if not born yet - long, healthy life 👍). The Prayer of Apology and Thanksgiving ahead of time for He is worthy.

Strengthen them in body and soul,
and bless their work,
that they may give comfort to those for whose salvation Your Son became Man,

Heavenly Father,
