True Quote by Pope JP II?

Hi, I was discussing my faith with a good friend of mine this weekend and asked me that he seems to believe that after Pope John Paul 2nd, was shot, and after recovering he was quoted as Thanking Our Lady for saving him, my friend asked why did’nt he thank Jesus?

I told him I had never heard of this before, and I would find out for him., as I dont believe this quote is accurate or taken out of context.

On May 13, 1981, a man shot Pope. As the ambulance carried him to the hospital, the Pope kept praying, “Mary, my mother! Mary, my mother!” One year later, the Pope made a pilgrimage to Fatima to thank Our Lady of Fatima for saving his life and to consecrate the entire human race to her.

The third secret of fatima foretold the attempt on his life. Perhaps Our Lady was on his mind becuase of this.
 
Your friend presented the statement as true, it’s up to him to provide the evidence for it, not you.
 
Thanks, for your quick replies so far, I actually explained the Fatima story to him, and even explained that the pope later I believe put one of the bullets into to the crown of the statue of Mary, when visiting Fatima, however I don’t feel this is an adequate explanation, however the statement is probably not true.

What is wrong with thanking Mary for intercession? Does thanking Mary, which I do frequently, mean one is not thanking Jesus?
 
Basically the information is correct as is Bob’s comments. I am suspect of this being the third secret but JP II clearly believed it was. In the third secret many people die including the leader.

If I fall off a cliff in a remote area with no reasonable hope of rescue and, out of nowhere, someone shows up and helps me, should I only thank God, but not the guy that shimmied down there to pull me out? Provided we CAN say thank you, why shouldn’t we?? :confused:

It never ceases to amaze me how so many non-Catholic Christians have such a non-rational “either/or” mind-set. Thank God (and Mary) that I’m Catholic!😉
 
The Doctor that treated the Pope recently claimed that John Paul II should not have survived that wound. Maybe he was visited and saved by Mary. If so, who would you be thanking?
 
I believe that right before he was shot, Pope John Paul II bent down to bless a picture of the Blessed Virgin that someone was holding up to him. Had he not bent down, he would have been fatally injured. I have always heard that that is the reason why he thanked her and had such a strong devotion to her.
Someone please correct me if I am wrong.

Weigel says the the Pope believes that Mary intervened to save him. What the doctor said about how he survived, is that the bullet apparently changed paths though his body several times, and in doing do just avoided critical organs. It was as if Mary’s hand was guiding the bullet through his body, which was what JP II said. That is why he believes Mary’s intercession saved his life.
 
Once and for all, for any Protestants who may be reading this - COMPLETE AND UTTER devotion to Jesus, God the Father and the Holy Spirit DOES NOT mean that one CANNOT ALSO have a complete and utter devotion to Mary.

Just as married people can be utterly devoted to their spouses AND their children at one and the same time. Their love for one DOES NOT detract from love for the others. Or indeed from their love of God.

It’s not that difficult a concept to understand, people. Love begets love. That is why Jesus asks us to serve him by loving our fellow human beings.

Thanks for the post, I remember more details now too. The bullet actually changed paths in a way that would be impossible to do on its own. Sharp turns etc, something that is just not possible for a normal bullet being fired.
 
Evidently some folks take offense at our Lady. And therefore have a problem w/ God.
 
John Paull II said that ‘one hand was shooting and another hand was directing the bullet’ - that is what you probably alluded to.
 
Maybe Jesus was out playing golf at the time, while Mary was on call…

I’m sure the Pope thanked Jesus, the Father and the Holy Spirit as well as the surgeons and folks who patched him up and nursed him back to health, as well as the butcher, baker and candle stick maker.
