I have an atheist friend who is fond of saying that everything is just “atoms and opinions”. Leaving that aside, he likes to talk about “projections”. I think that’s his way of getting around the logical inconsistency of why he claims there is no such thing as right or wrong but yet makes judgments/statements as if there were.

He uses the word “projections” or “projecting” but I’m not 100% sure what he means. Can anyone enlighten me on this kind of speak?

Simple answer: ask him what he means by “projections.”

He is more qualified to answer than we are.

This will also help him be accountable for the way he uses language, pointing out the inconsistency of his speech.

Some of this depends on your point of view, so it’s kind of relative. But a “projection” to me implies someone, something previous must’ve been behind it. A thing, person, being put out a projection.

Atom have order. So do smaller particles. Does such order occur randomly? I Don’t think so. In the “waters of eternal life” Jesus said “The perfect one peered into them and there was movement.” Look at the void (“Waters of eternal life”). There are galaxies beginning movement, star systems beginning movement. The force of mind behind each of these events shows a being of enormous mind. Mind creates movement. So focused, strong and vivid that if the creator took his mind off us for a moment, we’d cease to exist.

HTH That’s how they looked at it long ago.

Dear Dandelion Wine:

If he says that all of our judgments of right and wrong, truth and falsity, or even our perceptions of the world, are simply “projections,” here’s something you can point out. If I say that something is red, let us say, and you say it is not red, one of us has to be right and the other wrong. The logical law of excluded middle says A or not-A always has to be true. If he denies this, he is being illogical. If he accepts it, then he has admitted there is a reality beyond our “projections”; and so our projections are not the basis for truth or reality.

However, in order for this to happen, he does have to hold himself accountable to logic; from your description, this might not be the case.

There is an absolute reality and a individual reality. Two or more people do not see all things exactly like another. Each has “his” own reality. The ultimate reality is “emptiness”. Now don’t get confused on the terms. Emptiness is God’s reality provided for others to fill with “their” reality. If interested I can give you a source for this. But you’d have to learn the terms. It does fit logic.

Projections have to “come” from something or somewhere. Are we projections? Are two cars we agree on there existing. Are they projections?
