My son, age 8, is very bright and a natural skeptic. He asked me recently (in a conversation about religious matters) how we really know what’s true. Instead of quoting the Baltimore Catechism (“Because the Church says so!”), I told him that’s a great question, maybe the most important question, and we would work on answering that, and it’s not quick easy answer.
I see him as very vulnerable in the future to skeptics who challenge him with nre ideas… so I want to make sure they are NOT new ideas to him. He’s going to a new public charter school this year (with a “classical” curriculum ala Charlotte Mason) but we are homeschooling him in faith formation this year instead of doing the parish program.
So I need recommendations of a book or at least outline of “pre-apologetics”, some sort of intro to critical thinking for kids. Preferably it would be explicitly Catholic but at least compatible with Catholic philosophy and logic. (In fact, a course in logic might be an option, except that even for a bright, math-savvy kid, that’s probably way too much for his age.) I’ve seen the Friendly Defenders cards, but I want to get at something more fundamental before delving into answers to objections. Thanks!
