I encountered a passage in Jeremiah that got me to thinking, which is always a good thing.

Jeremiah 20:16-18

16Let that man be like the cities
that the LORD overthrew without pity;
let him hear a cry in the morning
and an alarm at noon,
17because he did not kill me in the womb;
so my mother would have been my grave,
and her womb forever great.
18Why did I come out from the womb
to see toil and sorrow,
and spend my days in shame?

In one sense, I wonder if a person could justify abortion.

On the other hand is there an un-spoken truth about the fetus ?

Verse 17 specifically uses the word “kill”. How can you kill
something if it is not alive ?

Is verse 17’s line: " because he did not kill me in the womb;
so my mother would have been my grave,
and her womb forever great." a sarcastic coment over the notion of a child being killed in its mother’s womb and left there ?

In verse 18 “Why did I come out from the womb
to see toil and sorrow,
and spend my days in shame?” birth appears to be an
infant’s “coming-out” party. To me the image is like that of
an individual having a home and getting-up and going to work.

These 2 passages say one important message for us to hear, the fetus is very much alive and is a human being.

Just as stupid as the idea of being killed in its mother’s womb and she remaining in the appearance of on-going pregnancy, so stupid is the idea of abortion.

What do you think ?

Regards
