My Wiccan aquantice wrote on another board: "I was a member of a number of parishes in NY and FL and went to Catholic school through the university level for my undergrad degree. Many of friends and family are still practicing catholics or at least identify as such and still go to mass on holidays. There have been no memos or sermons for suddenly seeking out and praying for converts.

There are always some people on the edges who grasp on certain aspects with fervor like Mary worship. I was something of a Marian myself. When Catholics “pray for all sinners now at and the hour of (our) death, Amen” in the Hail Mary, are they praying for conversions? No, they’re not. Catholics are sinners too. They are praying for themselves and their families more than anyone else. I think you’re misunderstanding the context of that."

How do I respond to this with charity using the CCC especally (As they discussion is on Protestants out to convert others I want to use sources that Catholics use that Protestants do not. However Catholic commentary on the Bible is a good one to).

Thanks! Gah everytime I think I am home free from the RCC I get pulled right back in! >.<

Amen - Catholics are sinners too.
Even the pope.

And it should only be natural that one would pray for oneself and the immediate circle of relatives.
I mean we go to work to provide for these people, not for the general public.
We spend most of our lives living, raising, loving, and defending our family, why would one not pray for ourselves?
Why is this a sin?

The Hail Mary is a Christ centered prayer. Your friend is taking it out of context. It is not a prayer of selfish intentions, but a prayer of praise to Christ and for His gift of grace. Most importantly, it is a prayer of inner reflection and acknowledgment of our fallibility compared to Christ’s perfection
We ask Mary to pray for “us” sinners - which your friend should be able to accept includes everyone - now and at the hour of our death - it basically means all the time. Pray for us from now until this trial is over.

The CCC is a good resource.
I also recommend other books such as “Refuting the Attack on Mary”.
There are a gazillion resources on this very website concerning the rosary and Marian devotion.

To clearify she means Catholics do not use ANY of the following to get converts.

Rosary (reason she mentioned the Hail Mary), Green Scapular, Miracoulos Medal, chaplets, Adoration, Mass.

That Catholics have ZERO desire to seek converts. None, notta, zip, zero. That we do not give a darn if your Wiccan, Scientologist, Muslim, Satanist or Atheist and we wont care.

She has also stated that there is what the Vatican says about Roman Catholics and what Catholics really do and that real Catholics do not really care if the Pope talks about evanglisim.

In fact trying to bring Catholics back into the Church or Non-Catholics into the Church are NOT real Catholics (If that makes sense).

So I am looking for sources in the CCC and Catholic writings to show we do.

Hope that clears stuff up!

The Green Scapular is specifically meant to win conversions. Where is she getting that it’s not?

geocities.com/Athens/Parthenon/9863/greenscapular.html

We believe Scripture:
“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, to the close of the age” (Mt. 18:19-20).

Every parish has an RCIA committee, who’s job it is to catechise converts.

Pope Paul VI’s encyclical Evangelii nuntiandi is all about Evangelization, and he states that the Church "exists in order to evangelize. . . .”

Catholics Come Home is an apostelate dedicated to bringing Catholics back to the Church.

Thanks but we can shut this done. My opposite in the debate basicly came out and said Pope, Magistarium, Bible, CCC ect. just do not count or matter and have nothing to do with “REAL” Catholicism.

Therefore I called the debate off.
