Hi everyone!

I just had a big problem at work. I am a dentist working for a big company. I fought management about concerns on (their) honesty and putting patients health first over the need to the need post high earnings.

The thing is… I think that trying to economize at the expense of patient’s health, especially with regards to sterilization is a a big no-no. I mean, we are in the healthcare business! —aren’t we suppose to keep the patient sick-free instead of adding to their health problems? Think of all the diseases that’s out there—like AIDS and Hepatitis B!

The thing is, being vocal and trying to protect patients rights was taken very badly. I was fired.

Now, I wonder —did I do right? I have no job because I tried to follow what my faith told me—to speak up against injustices. I feel very bad that I am suffering while the person who was caught (not by me, by our assistant)not following the rules—got away without so much as an investigation—just because she gave the company what it wanted: BIG EARNINGS.

I wonder where is the justice here?

Please pray for me. I am scared for my future.

have faith in God. It is only through Him that goodness comes. You did the right thing. I will pray for you. God Bless you for having courage.

My dentist claims he is the last independent businessman on earth. He is the ONLY dentist I will let see my teeth, even though I have to drive over 30 miles from home to do this.

So, yes, I will pray for you. But remember- you have no shame in what you did. And you have good company. Our Lord Himself and many of the saints were in the same predicament. Nobody can take your talent, or your caring, away from you.

Are you saying that denists don’t sterilize equipment and could be infecting everyone with AIDS/hepatitis?

IT seems that you’re in a “whistle-blower” situation. Have you considered speaking to a lawyer about this? I think a lot of people would want to know this, try to make it as public as possible!

Hi maryj and Outinchgoburbs,

Thanks for your prayers. Really need it right now.

Couldn’t sleep last night asking myself–why did I bother to post this message. Been wondering why life can be so unfair.

I know God loves me and will never abandon me, but he also loves my enemies because they are also God’s children---- but I am having a hard time forgiving them for what they had done to me. Its just too painful for me right now.

Its so hard to keep to the right path when life deals you a hard blow like this.

Thank you again for your prayers, my friends.

Point taken. Thanks for the advise.

I am not saying everyone in my profession here do not follow rules in sterilization. Many dentists here also have as big a conscience as I have, thank God!

I learned to care about this issue because it was important to my professors when I was studying dentistry and they made sure that we understood and believed that fact. I heard of cases where bad sterilization can cause infection. When I graduated and through my years in practice, it became my issue. I am very strict regarding this.

This is just an isolated case in the company that nonetheless led to my dismissal. I think priorities were not in the right perspective.

I hope things will change for the good of everyone.

Ma. Eugenia,

God bless you! It is never wrong to follow your conscience. Take solice in knowing that if the company is taking short cuts in hygene, they will eventually pay the price and you won’t be involved!

God takes care of those who lead a moral life. Trust in Him!

You are in my prayers.

Peace

Tim

Thank you, sir, for your prayers. You don’t know how much this means to me.

I feel like a pebble up against a mountain----because the company I worked for is a big one and has far better clout and resources than I do, as my well-meaning friends warned me.

I try very hard to draw strength from believing that God loves me.

I don’t know why He allowed this to happen—but there must be a purpose that will be ultimately lead me to be a better person. I hope that I will always remember that through the pain and my overwhelming concern about my future.

Thank you, my friend, for caring to pray for me. God bless!

Capitalism is not Christianity.

Thanks for replying to my post, my friend.

Let’s face it, capitalism is the way most countries in this world want to be. Just take a look at China—they have a communist governement , but very much capitalist in the way they manage their economy. So, we have to live with the reality.

The important thing is for companies to find a balance with wanting to earn profit with giving what is due to their clients at the same time (EX: patients have a due right that only materials that have been properly sterilized be used on them–and to expect that the company should be responsible that policies regarding this are strictly followed). NOTE: In the company I worked for, we were averaging 5 - 8 patients per dentist a day in a 7 day work week. That is a big number that could be affected–if policies are not implemented properly.

In my 5-year work for the company–I went through terrible indignity of having my salary lowered at one point compared to other dentists in the system because I didn’t want to toe the company line to emphasize on production. A colleague of like mind, like myself, made patients wait until sterilization was achieved.

We didn’t care if that meant that the company couldn’t accept other clients while we waited—the important thing was it was sterilized! That meant we posted lower earnings. What could we do?-- materials were limited and needed constant sterilization.
Still, we didn’t take it as an excuse to cut corners.

My colleague has gone to another country and am not part of the company anymore.

As one of my former bosses told me (NOTE: this one was a good boss who resigned from the company) the yardstick of the company is not the sacrifices I make (like, stupid as it may seem, spending 5 - 10% of my salary every month to buy dental materials to help the company give the best service to our clients), or my loyalty to patients and company—bottomline was the “yardstick of whether you are a good employee or not is only one: PROFIT”.

That is what happens when companies put more value in profit and service comes far second. To think that healthcare by definition is first and foremost service-oriented. But such concept gets lost in the need to post high earnings.

The quality of fairness and honesty in any business should be honed and exemplified as important. It is important for healthcare companies to focus at the long term repercussions of their actions and policies to their clients (EX: If a patient gets infected with Hepatis B–the person will find out about it years or months after).

The responsiblity of the company does not end when the patient pays his bill. Especially in the healthcare business, the quality of treatment patients get will determine the quality of life they will have to live------long after they had paid their dues to the company.

They say that business is secular—God doesn’t enter into the minds and hearts whose main goal is profit. As Catholic, I couldn’t stand by and not speak out againt the injustice.

Still, the price that I have to pay is that I lost my job.

No matter what happened—I believe that God is good and He will never abandon me.

Thank again, my friend, for your answer.
