Near as I can tell, there is a long and often rocky relationship between the Catholic Church and Judaism.

The problem is, I am having trouble trying to find any details on this from a Catholic perspective. There’s a lot of secular material, that paints a very unflattering depiction of the Church when it comes to Judaism. But I take it with a grain of salt, as it comes across as having an ax to grind.

So what books or other material is out there for me to understand the history of the Church with Judaism and what our relationship with them is now?

Thanks.

Josh

There is a small amount of information here:
Gigot, F. (1910). Judaism. In The Catholic Encyclopedia. New York: Robert Appleton Company. CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Judaism

If it’s the true picture why would you need another source? Usually, not always, secular literature tends to be more accurate because they aren’t viewing it through a religious lens. If you find a Catholic source and it softens the story will that mean it’s more accurate or just more palpable? The history between Judaism and Catholicism is rather ugly at times. There are also uplifting stories or cooperation as well but these stories usually were people going against the usual norms of treatment. I’m sure you could find a book where it’s all sunshine and warm fuzzies if you look hard enough but I guarantee it’s not the truth.

It’s much better, in my opinion, to see and acknowledge the discord that existed and see how much better we are doing now.

On the one hand, THE POPES AGAINST THE JEWS/David Kertzer. On the other hand, WERE THE POPES AGAINST THE JEWS?/ Justus George Lawler.

It’s a start.

Secular literature tends to be more accurate” than Catholic literature because it’s not religious. So, Catholic historians are lying and atheists are necessarily telling the truth
Talk about misreading what I wrote! Do you realize that many secular scholars ARE religious?

Goodbye to you as well. May you find peace and happiness on your journey.
