Ok, I know I’ve been kind of quiet for awhile, but I do have a question, and it’s an honest one.

My company gave us all turkeys for Thanksgiving, but as some of you know, my mother was declining and passed away Dec 1. Needless to say I did not roast the turkey.

My daughter was on visitation over Christmas, so again, no turkey.

I’ve never just kept one frozen. I’ve always cooked them within a day or two of purchase…

How long can they stay frozen?🤷

According to the USDA, a frozen turkey can be kept for 12 months. Interestingly, they state, “Freezer storage is for quality only. Frozen foods remain safe indefinitely.”

Firstly, so sorry to hear about your mom. You have my prayers.

Did you purchase the turkey frozen? Frozen turkeys are flash frozen on site and there should be a date on it. Those could stay frozen for a long time.

If you purchased it fresh, it could have been a few days from farm to market. I would try to cook it soon. You could always freeze the meat after it’s cooked.

Also, thaw it in the refrigerator, to avoid salmonella.

Have fun cooking!

I’ve kept one frozen for at least 12 months. I like turkey so am not adverse to cooking one at a non-holiday time 😃 so don’t tend to keep one that long except for when one manages to find its way to the bottom of the freezer 😉 then I’ll pull it out and cook it.

It was handed out at work, outside, in Florida, but it was frozen, and I took my lunch break and drove it home to the freezer.

I don’t know how long they were sitting out while they sorted them by size and got ready for the distribution though…

First a hug and I’m sorry to hear about your mother.:hug3:

I had turkey overload this Holiday season. I won two of them, and a ham. I also found one in the big freezer, too.

They freeze forever!!! You can have turkey for the Fourth of July if you want.

The story of my life: surrounded by turkeys.😃

Of course you can have a St. Valentine’s Day turkey feast…or Easter turkey…or St. Joseph the Worker Day turkey. There are lots of people who buy turkeyburgers, turkey franks, and turkey lunchmeat throughout the year.

I’d follow others’ advice here about thawing. And certainly try to finish up the leftovers before next Thanksgiving.

For the loss of your love on, RIP.

Well, maybe we’ll have No School on January 19 turkey:)

That way I can work on the thawing after Mass…

A frozen turkey will take 2-3 days to thaw in the fridge, so, take it out EARLY!!

We’ve found it to be more like 4 or 5 days before the thing is thawed clear through. Might depend on the size, though. I can’t believe we have a turkey thread! I love it! Roanoker

Frozen turkey rocks!!! You cannot buy cheaper meat!

I picked up two ~22 pounders right before Thanksgiving for $8 each. One got roasted mid-December, and turned into a nice dinner with stuffing, and also got turned into multiple trays of turkey enchiladas and turkey rice casseroles.

The second will probably come out sometime in February.

…and…

I’m very sorry about your mom. There’s never a good time to lose a parent, but I have to think the holiday season is about the worst. Hopefully when you roast the next turkey, this whole slightly silly line of conversation will make you smile and raise a forkful in your mom’s honor.
