My MIL says that she was told by her brother(a priest) that the biggest sin is turning a person away from the Church. This is how she justifies supporting gay marriage.

This makes no sense to me, because if that we’re the case, how could the Church say that anything is sinful? It might turn someone away.

I know her opinion on this is wrong, but how do I explain that to her? How do I refute her position?

Turning someone away from the Church is bad but having someone “in the Church” commit apostasy is an even bigger sin.

Not following the Church teachings is committing apostasy and places one’s soul in mortal danger.

As for what to tell her? Well if she is not willing to learn and follow Jesus and His teachings as handed down through Holy mother Church what can we do except pray for her! 🤷

Take her to 1st Corinthians Chapter 5 and ask her if St.Paul was partaking in the biggest sin, well then again St.Paul did refer to himself as the chief of sinners

Since there is no such thing as “gay marriage” (it lacks the ingredients for a marriage), then she is basically lying while simultaneously holding a heretical teaching. If she is not invincibly ignorant of the teaching, she would actually excommunicate herself and possibly the other person. See Canon Law 751 and 1364.

But we aren’t turning anyone away from the Church, we are simply being faithful to the teachings of Christ and his Church as per Lk 17:3,Mt 18:15 etc, etc. If people can’t accept the truth then unfortunately they walk away as per Jn 6:60-.6:66.

When Jesus delivered the bread of life discourse some found it a hard saying, Jesus didn’t say oh well never mind then you can follow me even if you don’t believe, but rather he offers them more proof by mentioning the ascension. But there were those who still did not believe and so walked away. Our Blessed Lord went everywhere looking for the lost sheep, but his refrain wasn’t come in regardless it don’t matter, its nice to be nice, rather it was go and sin no more (cf. Jn 8:11).

If your brother sins rebuke him if he repents forgive him, this is the way to Him who is the Way,the Truth, and the Life.

This could be taken to mean something altogether different.

“Turning a person away from the Church” also means intentionally leading someone away from Christ and into a false…belief, philosophy, religion, etc.

So maybe your MIL misunderstood her brother, or interpreted his words to her liking. (mothers-in-law have a tendency to do that. 😉 )

Also, taken out of context, it’s hard to know what the priest meant, whether he himself was justifying gay marriage or if it was a random, toss-away comment.

Or, maybe the priest said something foolish and is himself misled.

NOBODY gets turned away. Ever. The Church just expects it’s faithful to adhere to the rules FAITHFULLY. The faithful submit to the laws of God Almighty, not the other way around. Engaging in homosexual acts is a sin, and always will be. God won’t change His laws just to suit your mother in law. Being predisposed to homosexual behavior isn’t in and of itself a sin. ACTING on those impulses most certainly is. The Church won’t turn people away. They turn themselves away.

Your mother in law wouldn’t walk into someone else’s house and tell her host what the rules are, would she? I didn’t think so. Why do it to God?

It sounds kind of harsh, but that’s just the way it is.

My favorite quote from Godfather Part III; “We have laws… we have rules… we have very OLD rules…”

  • 1 Corinthians 6: 9 - 10 no sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor male prostitutes, nor homosexual offenders, 10 nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor slanderers, nor swindlers, will inherit the kingdom of God.
Homosexual marriage doesn’t fix anything for the homosexual. It’s yet another abomonation. Just look at the consequences Paul speaks of for the sin. The Holy Spirit inspired Paul to write that. Which means Jesus taught that [Jn 14:26]

I wasn’t there, so I really can’t say what the priest told her. I’m guessing, he might have been saying, love the sinner, hate the sin. If she, is going to be in the Catholic Faith, she must follow the Teachings of the Catholic Church. You can not justify the action of sin, but we can have Charity(love), for the sinner. This might be, what she is confused about. By loving the sinner, does not condone there actions. Jesus, forgave the Adultress, when he said, he how has no sin cast the first stone. He, was not justifying her sin,but the people were judging her.He then said to her," GO AND SIN NO MORE!" We don’t judge the sinner, we love them, but we can not accept the sin.The Church, has the Authority from Jesus Christ, through the Holy Spirit, to guide all in such matters.Love, is the key to explaining, the Church"s Teaching, on Spiritual and Moral Matters. We are called, to love someone, that is Gay, but we are not called,to except the life style.I would seriously pray, for all involved here. Ask the Holy Spirit, to touch all of them ,and lead them back, to the teachings of the Church, which is guided by the Holy Spirit.Justifying Gay marriage, is justifying sin action, but we still love Gays, and pray for them, that is what I’d tell her.😉
God Bless and the Love and peace of the Holy Spirit be with you.

p.s. When Jesus spoke the truth, there were some that turned away from him. But it didn’t stop him from telling the truth.*John 6:58,64-66 This is the bread which came down from heaven, not such as the fathers ate and died; he who eats this bread will live for ever." … But there are some of you that do not believe." For Jesus knew from the first who those were that did not believe, and who it was that would betray him. And he said, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by the Father.” After this many of his disciples drew back and no longer went about with him. *

There is no difference’s in sin with a homosexual committing homosexual acts and a straight person committing adultery. They are both Mortal sins. So what part of the bible says any different. NONE. The old saying is. You make your own bed and you have to lie in it. Commit the sin and pay the price.
