Inspired by the two recent film threads.

Anyone currently watching or has watched any good TV shows this year? Doesn’t have to be new but my Netflix/Amazon Prime/Disney+ queues are currently empty and I’m looking for recommendations.

To start the ball rolling I’ll put some up.

Snowpiercer- based on the film of the same name, and produced by the director of this year’s Best Picture this really fleshes out the world of the film, has high stakes without being cartoonish, although what could be considered a minor niggle can lead to an extinction level event. Interestingly it’s also one of the very, very few examples of genuinely left wing mainstream US media, on Snowpiercer, 1001 cars long.

Tiger King- well this was event documentary television. A fascinating look into a frankly bizarre world of intrigue, and Carole Baskin.

I started and finished watching all three seasons of “Yes, Minister”, and am now on “Yes, Prime Minister”. A very interesting show about politics and bureaucracy to say the least. It’s hilarious, scary, and even sickening at times, but all on point I think.

I love that, “Dont tell me about the press I know all about the press…”

90s episodes of The Simpsons. I’m a 90s kid, so, what else is there? Back when it was more even-handed politically, and whilst aspects of religion were criticised, it was ultimately perceived as a good. And also, it’s Disney +, also Darkwing Duck (once again, 90s kid)

They both revolve around Hasidic Jews, but Unorthodox is about a Hasidic girl’s escape from the community while Shtisel follows the day-to-day lives of a Hasidic family in Jerusalem.

I don’t want to spoil them for anyone, so I have to be vague.

Unorthodox has been criticised by some as inaccurate and not at all representative of how Hasidic communities really are, but it’s a good watch nevertheless. I actually learned about Shtisel from an article I was reading by a Hasidic Jew criticising Unorthodox’s portrayal of the community. He touted Shtisel as more accurate.

I’m not 100% sure where you are from, but I think the US. I would say that Yes, Minister/Prime Minister is possibly the single best introduction to the way Britain works, even 40 years after the first episode was broadcast. Honestly, not a lot has changed. You can still describe somebody as “a Sir Humphrey” and people will know exactly what you mean. The acting is superb. I don’t know how well known they are outside the UK, but Paul Eddington, Nigel Hawthorne, and Derek Fowlds (who died earlier this year) were all much loved here. Hawthorne is possibly known for his portrayals of George III on stage and screen.

I’m an American, yes! I had a basic understanding of UK governance going into the show (It’s Parliamentary, Queen is Head of State, PM is Head of Government, etc.), and that was basically it! I hadn’t really heard of any of those actors before this. I’m uncomfortable in some ways with how I can understand Sir Humphrey’s view point; I think he in a way represents the worst parts of my personality which is why I feel that way. 🤣 And his speech about why Britain was in the EU is a bit haunting to say the least considering what’s going on now with Boris Johnson et al.

I recently finished Netflix’s A Series Of Unfortunate Events.

Also watched season 2 of their Lost in Space reboot.

Season 1 of Star Trek: Picard on CBS All Access.

I’ve been watching Star Wars: The Clone Wars on Disney+, on my lunch break. Midway through Season 3.
