At our parish, we have a traditional chior and a more “progressive choir” who happened to be at the Mass that I attended this morning (Immaculate conception of Mary). My question is about the subtle change to the mass. Examples: the responsorial psalm was changed from what the missal said it should of been for today to a completely different one, the gospel acclaimation is modified (additional words are added to it), and the Lamb of God is ammended to add “Jesus, lamb of God you take away the sins of the world”. Are any or all of these permissable? If not, what can I do?

God bless,

Ken

Make sure your missal is current. The Novus Ordo has a habit of changing readings from year to year.

Whatever the Bishop permits is permissable in the Novus Ordo. They call it inculturation, usually newspeak for anything goes unless the majority of the parish write to the bishop.

If not, what can I do?
1. Visit the priest with as many members as you can, say 3-5. Ask WHY? just an inquiry at this point. Keep it friendly. He is being asked to remove a confusion at this point.
2. If his reasons are not satisfactory, get a much larger group to write to the bishop with the violations and the priest’s reasons as he stated them. Have everyone sign the letter asking if this is in line with liturgical norms, and that the priest’s reasons did not appear satisfactory.
Do not contribute a tithe until you get a response.
If no satisfactory response, you’re cooked. So:
3. Find a Traditional parish. Take your like-minded members
** with you.**
4. Find a Traditional Mass site. …FSSP …approved.
Finally, keep in mind that novelty is the mindset of the American dioceses. Some more, some less, but all novelty is worshipped. Do not expect tradition or standards to prevail…for long anywhere in the Novus Ordo.http://forums.catholic-questions.org/images/icons/icon9.gif
Good Luck

there are several “sung” versions of the Mystery of Faith, and Lamb of God that are approved, just make sure the one being used is approved. Just because you never heard it before does not make it wrong. There are several responsorial psalms and responses that may be used in Advent, or on feast of Mary, and may be subsituted for the one in the missalette. by the way, the missalette is not the final authority on what is liturgically correct and what isn’t. Our priest has to change or disregard a lot of what is in the missalette. We just bought the least objectionable one on the market that meets our need, and work around it.

Please do not waste the bishop’s time with a protest until you have done your homework, as suggested above.
First, simply ask the priest for clarification in a non-confrontational, non-combative way.
Second, find out if what you heard or saw is truly an abuse. This requires a lot of education and research, and is very time-consuming. Abuses are not based on your sentimental rembrance of childhood liturgy experience, or on what was done in your last parish. There are firm directives, available to any serious Catholic who wants to do the research.
third, if you truly see a serious liturgical abuse, get times, dates, facts, names and if the parish priest cannot satisfactorily explain the situation, and you do decide to go to the bishop, be factual. hearsay and generalities will not give him anything useful. Put it in writing, be prepared to back it up.
