Could anyone please help me locate, in the Old Testament, where the Twelve tribes are listed??? Are they listed?
Thanks!

Check out Genesis 49.

They are:

Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Zebulun, Issachar, Dan, Gad, Asher, Naphtali, Joseph, and Benjamin.

You made a slight error AWALT, the names of Jacob’s sons are not the names of the 12 Tribes.

Levi is not considered one of the tribes, rather his descendants are the Levites that were responsible for the maintenance of the Temple.

Likewise Joseph is not the father of a tribe, but two through his sons Ephraim and Mannaseh.

Thus by eliminating Levi from the count but also counting the tribes for Joseph’s sons you get 12 Tribes.

I believe that only two of the twelve are around today. The other ten are considered “lost”.

The Tribes of Benjamin (where St. Paul hailed from) and Juda returned to the southern kingdom of Judah at least partially intact. The ten northern tribes never re-constituted after the Diaspora. Those that returned mixed and mingled with the gentiles and formed what was known in Jesus’ time as Samaria.

Benjamin was not deported with the 10 northern tribes. It remained intact until the Babylonian exile and was taken away with the tribe of Judah.

In Genesis 49: 3-27 it lists the 12 (Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Zebulun, Issachar, Dan, Gad, Asher, Naphtali, Joseph, Benjamin).

Immediately after in verse 28 it says, “All these are the twelve tribes of Israel; and this is what their father said to them as he blessed them,…”

So how is v. 28 reckoned with Levi and Joseph not being of the tribes? I see Numbers states things somewhat differently…

The gospel of Luke, I believe, tells us about a census of the world, wherein each man had to return to the area of his birth.

If that is so, then descendents of the twelve tribes might have each returned to their respective part of the Promised Land at the time of the birth of Jesus.

If there ever were an appointed time for the twelve tribes to re-gather, it might well have been the time of the arrival of the Messiah.

Perhaps I am squinting my eyes too much here, but what a wonderful picture of the kingdom of God there was and what a picture of heaven on earth we might have had, to see the Messiah arrive in the midst of the Chosen People in the Promised Land.

Beautiful, yes. But true? No. Remeber, Israel split up into 2 separate countries. The northern kingdom made up of the 10 tribes, was conquered and sent into exile in the 700’s BC. The people were allowed to return, but they hopelessly mingled with the gentiles, thus the hated Samaritan’s came about. The two southern tribes, Judah and Benjamin, were conquered by Babylon in 579BC(?) and allowed to return by Cyrus of Persia. Cyrus allowed the Jews to return and to renew their religious ways. So there were only the organized remnants of the two southern tribes.
