Hey guys, how do you feel about priests/religious using Twitter/Facebook as a means of evangelizing?

Personally, I find it ingenious. It can reach so many teens whose lives revolve sadly around the internet, etc.

Follow me (it’s in my signature) and let me know how you guys find social networking as a tool to bring people closer to God.

I don’t think much of twitter. To me it is a substandard refashioning of irc. I have similarly dismal views of services such as myspace and facebook. When you start to get to blogging, then you can start to really put forth solid content.

You are so right!! I’m a teen whose life sadly revolves around the internet 😛 and reading a good blog about conversion to Catholicism from atheism was a huge help for me in coming back to the church. I love reading Catholic blogs.

It sounds like a good idea. Though for some secular people (esp. in Britain, I don’t know about the US) it would have to subtle, intriguing (I’m not sure how to describe it) to attract them, stuff that comes across as too over-the-top “religious” may turn them off.

The Internet in general definitely contributed to me to start attending church, and the information this site gave me the guts to visit Mass and see what it was like. (Otherwise I likely wouldn’t have felt welcome or “allowed” as a non-Catholic, and worried about the Catholic kneeling etc.)

I use Facebook and I post a short quote from a saint a day. Things that people can relate to like some of St Teresa of Avila talking about suffering. Since it is small there is a better chance of people reading it vs an entire article. Facebook also allows to post notes which I post what I have already posted on my blog. The plus side of this is all the friends see on the newsfeed that you posted a new note. Also it is my hope that people seeing a small quote may get people to view my profile page and run across some of the notes. If priests want to do it great.
