I have been interested about joining the priesthood for quite awhile, but I do not have a Bachelor’s degree. But I do have two Associate’s Degrees, does anyone know if this would be qualifying enough to join a seminary?

Thanks.

No, you need a bachelors degree to start any graduate studies, which the Masters of Divinity (which is requried for ordination in the USA unless you join a religious group that has their own seminary which then grants a pontifical degree but most will want a bachelors degree anyways).

The Masters of Divinity requires a bachelors degree as well as 30 credits of philosophy and 12 credits of theology.

When I started formation with the Carmelites I had an associate’s degree. I worked on my bachelors in the pre-novitate and go the required philosophy and theology credits. Some of your associate degree credits will most likely go towards a bachelors degree so that it will not take a full four years to get one.

In my diocese, some guys out of high school can apply to enter seminary. As a seminarian, he will study B.S in Philosophy. After he gets the degree, he will study for Master of Divinity.

Another guy who has been recently accepted to enter seminary does not have a bachelor degree, and because he is in mid 30’s, our diocese does not require him to get a BS degree, he will have to take some English classes, 2 years of pretheology and later 4 years of theology. (there will be 1 year of pastorial formation).

I had an Associates degree when I joined the Jesuits. With lots of hard work, I was able to satisfy the philosophy requirements the Jesuits needed as well as earn an undergrad degree in philosophy - all without having to extend my formation time. Now I am caught up and on track for ordination with my novice class.

I’ll keep you in my prayers!
