As a Protestant I have always heard (and believed) the teaching that there are 3 different baptisms.
My question comes down to number 1 and number 2. In support of number 1 I have heard the following scriptures be used.
ROMANS 6:3
Know ye not , that as many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?
1 COR 12:13
For by one Spirit we are all baptized into one body…
1 PETER 3:21
The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us, (not putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience twoard God,) by resurrection of Jesus Christ.
GAL 3:27
For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ has put on Christ.
There are others too, I think, but I don’t want to get too spammy. I have heard these verses used to validate the theory of the first baptism I listed: that we are SPIRITUALLY baptized into the family of God and that the above verses are NOT talking about water baptism because, though water baptism is a good thing and there is Scripture to support it, it is not necessary for salvation.
I suppose my question is several fold and at first I was going to direct it mainly at the Protestants on this board since this is a Protestant line of thinking. But, if there are any Catholics or Orthodox here that can shed some light, please do. So here goes.
- Being baptized ‘spiritually’ into the Lord’s family when you become a Christian.
- Being baptized with water.
- Being baptized with the Holy Spirit, with the evidence of speaking in tongues.

- Have you ever heard of this “3 Baptism” (or 2 baptism) theory?
- Exactly how did anyone decide that the above verses were NOT talking about water baptism?
