Two Questions: Passiontide Mass & Good Friday

1. For the past two weeks, the priest (different priests) have been starting the prayers at the bottom of the steps instead of going into the Introit. Why would they do this? (Also, the past two weeks, this and last, have been low Masses. Could this have been a reason.)
2. Good Friday Mass is at 1500 (Latin Mass Parish – two hours away). I am supposed to work then. Is my responsibility to my employer (I can ask that she schedule the part-time girl, though, it means less money for me), or to The Church in this situation? It’s not Obligatory, but, it IS the entire reason for this religion. My boss is Baptist and I think she would understand, but, I just want to know, in this situation, is my first priority to my boss?

Ok, I’m sorta guessing at the first one since you are attending a Latin Mass and it’s been awhile but, since in the Pre-vatican II liturgy the last week or so before Holy Week was Passion week and therefore treated slightly more solemnly.
If your Baptist boss were ok with it and you felt strongly enough to attend during the day at the Latin mass then go for it as long as your not also putting off the boss or the part time girl, maybe she wanted to attend Good friday services somewhere.
Also you can still attend at a novis ordo at night depending on if there is a catholic or even an eastern rite or orthodox service being held (orthodox service no communion for you) if they are available. Good friday, is very important however and even if you have to miss mass(of the pre-sanctified) you can still and should mark the event at home with maybe a crucifix and candles. It might be a good idea if you do the prayers with the children in English rather than Latin.
whatever you chose remember God really doesn’t want you to lose a job for his sake. especially since you have a family to take care of. Peace and Holy holy week and joyfilled Easter!

By all means, take the time to spend the three hours of Our Lord’s passion at the Mass of the Presanctified on Good Friday. You will leave fulfilled!

As far as the beginnings of the Masses for the last two weeks, beginning with Passion Sunday and continuing on Palm Sunday, The Judica Me psalm which is the first prayer said at the foot of the altar is omitted during Passiontide (as well as at Masses for the Dead). So the Priest goes from the Introibo Ad Altare Dei antiphon to the Confetior, which significantly shortens the Prayers at the Foot of the Altar. In the TLM, the prayers are never completely omitted on Sundays so there should never be a time where the priest immediately ascends the altar after the Aspereges/Vidi Aquam and prior to the Introit.

Only the psalm Iudica me and the Gloria Patri are omitted during Passiontide; the other prayers at the foot of the altar are said. On Palm Sunday, however, if there was a procession, all of the prayers at the foot of the altar are omitted.

Ah, that explains it. We had a procession this Sunday and I thought I somehow missed part of the mass.
