hi, i am new here, first post.
i am quite young, 16, and i have two questions:
-if i look at a girl and appreciate her beauty, i mean, i think that she has a really pretty face, and that her legs are absolutely beautiful, but i do it without lust, i really do…is it still a sin?? is the face the only body part that i can appreciate without making it a sin??
-second, if i just listen to songs that make an apology to things that are against catholicism, is it a sin?? ex.: black metal

thanks in advance.

Well Chicken it’s not a sin to notice things. I watched Casino Royale last night and I thought that dude looked absolutely amazing, and I really wanted nothing more than to look like him for my wedding night (8 months away now)!

You’re at an age where people say that if you notice things then you are gay. Also, I know the black metal and goth culture very well, I have the scars to prove it.

There’s something about it that promotes lesbianism. Most of my female friends were self-avowed bisexuals. Especially the vampire stuff.

Chicken, I think you should ask yourself why the themes of death, blackness, anger, rejection, etc appeal so much to you. I know that its very hard sometimes to be 16, I went through it. It’s not wrong to feel passion and that kind of raw energy that the metal scene is into. The trick is, turning that energy into something spiritually useful.

Christianity isn’t all happy clappy worship songs and squeaky clean fun. It has a passionate side to it that would make any metal song look weak. You need to seek that side out.

Do you like to read? There are some good books out there. If you are interested, reply to my post and I will list some.

Thanks for aswering…actually, the thing that worried me was the looking at girls issue, i just posted the black metal stuff because as i was already posting, i could use one post for 2 questions.

Anyway, i am a musician, and i enjoy listening to a lot of different kinds of music, i don’t listen to black metal all the time, just once in a while, and i do it just because i think that they have very interesting musical ideias, it has nothing to do with their themes, i don’t even pay attention to the lyrics. But i knew enough about it to be bothered by the ideas these guys support. I don’t think that it is a sin to listen, i just wanted another person’s opinion.

other opinions please.
by the way, i am a boy, i don’t know if it was clear.

The general rule follows for lust “If I could I would…” as in you think about their beauty and then you fantasize about impure things. Also, we should avoid looking at provacative pictures because that is a temptation to sin, so staring at scantily clad women is not good either even if you aren’t entertaining impure thoughts, though lusting is worse then occasion of sin (but we shouldn’t do either!). Looking at a girl at school and noticing that her smile looks wonderful and sure she may have a nice figure and these thoughts lead you to a greater love and respect for her as a person is not wrong. lust is using someone for our own desires. Hope that makes sense.

I read in a book by Greg Popcak a great way of considering that feeling you get when you check out what we in England would call a fit lady.
Greg says that’s God’s way of telling you to do something really nice, or to be really nice to that person. You can develop this into a method of practising respect.

Heavy Metal? Dunno about that, heaviest I ever got was the Cult (She sells Sanctuary) and I frown on that now, some 20 years later. The heavy stuff can’t be positive IMO.

Oh, I’m sorry! I thought you were a girl with a possible issue with same-sex attraction!

Silly me!
no problem.

this is exactly the same way i think.

thank you all for answering!

I’d echo the statements about admiring a woman’s beauty. However, I would caution to not stop with the physical. There is plenty of beauty in other women who do not have the supermodel looks. I think back when the deaths of two women occurred near the same time: Blessed Mother Teresa and Princess Diana. We know which one the world thought was beautiful. However, which one do you think had the most beauty in God’s eyes? (Granted all life is beautiful in His eyes.)

As a rusty musician, the metal thing should be addressed. I always loved music that has an edge to it and gets a little aggressive and some even pattern their styles after the classical greats like Mozart and Beethoven. However, even though we do not “listen” to the lyrics of songs, they still impact us on subconscious levels. If the lyrics are blatantly against your faith it would not be wise to listen. Also, the music itself is geared toward anger so caution should be used in this area.
