WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. congressional leaders are giving up on broad immigration legislation that would legalize millions of illegal immigrants and instead will concentrate on border security ahead of the elections, Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist said on Wednesday.

“I think it would be next to impossible to pass a comprehensive bill that includes dealing with the diversity of 12 million people here in the next three weeks,” the Tennessee Republican told reporters.
President George W. Bush backs comprehensive immigration legislation along the lines passed by the U.S. Senate. That bill would have created a guest worker program and put millions of illegal immigrants on a path toward U.S. citizenship.

Doing the wrong thing to create “justice” is never IMHO the right thing to do. Please understand I want justice and fairness for us all. I also want to know who is crossing into the USA. But none of us are safe legal or illegal as long as this situation continues as it is.

I’m glad they are focusing on something the vast majority agree with - border security. They can figure out what to do with the 12 Million already here later, but at least they might get something done now.

Look at it this way: The Republicans hesitate about upsetting the cheap labor situation, the Democrats look foward to future voters and union personnel. So who is going to fire the first shot, the Red or the Blue.

We as taxpayers bear the burden of any plan by our taxes but our voice is weak and virtually unheard by either political party.

I don’t think you are correct. If that were true, then it wouldn’t be impossible to overhaul, as the article states. Amnesty or a Guest Worker program would be a done deal. There are people fighting from several different sides on this issue. That’s how it works.

Your last sentence really rings true to me. For the first time since the days of JFK, I’m really considering not voting this year. I am sick and tired of ALL the politicians ignoring the citizens of this country, and only doing the will of the special interest groups, and the miniorities. The border mess, the foreign trade mess, and the steadly rising prices of everything is wrecking this country, and none of them care to do anything about it.

Don’t be a quitter. To not vote just gives more power to those with whom you disagree.

No doubt about the fighting from ‘Several different sides’. Every side but the side of common sense. Border security is foremost! Everything else is but a compromise to evade existing law. Maybe it’s a 😉 jihadist event.I seriously doubt there will be a solution, at least not in my lifetime.

So, you are on Frist’s side. The article is about the need to do what is agreed upon - border security.

:ehh: Did you even read the article? What Frist is pushing for is immediate work on border security…nothing to do with the election. Tightening the border won’t make any “difference anyway?” Do you stand by that? Because if you do, your earlier comment that “Border security is foremost!” makes zero sense - a big fat **0. **

I am not on anybody’s side. Makes no difference anyway, the end result prior to the elections is a big fat 0

Believe me mister, everything has something to do with the upcoming election. Is it even remotely possible the Senate Majority Leader is NOT INTO POLITICS(?) time will bear me out on this one.

So, you don’t support Frist’s call to Congress to work on strengthening the borders because his reasons may be political… That makes sense.

I never said Frist wasn’t doing it for political reasons. Personally, I don’t care if Senator Kennedy made the statement. If the borders get tighter security, we all win.

What are you talking about? Catholics already come in all colors.
I live in San Diego, ground zero with the Mexican immigration question. I’m from the south, the great state of Virginia. I found lots of good Christians and good Catholics, don’t want other Christians and other Catholics with different skin pigmentation and culture living near their neighborhoods. Unless the darker skin pigmentation Christians are cleaning house or taking out garbage.

Reminds me of my Southern Baptist relatives who had lots of rules about what is considered dancing but did not want African American Southern Baptist kids going to school with their kids. But it was ok for their black co-religious to clean house and empty garbage.

Why is skin color is more important than common faith? Can’t seem to get an answer to that.

The color of the immigrants does not matter IMHO. What matters is how they come into this country. When someone has no other basis to allow this (illegal entry) to continue the issue of bigotry rears its ugly head to make an “empty” point.

The point remains that as a country we have an obligation to know who is in this country and what their intentions are.

Solution: term limits. Throw them all out and start all over again.
