During the past weeks we have been reading with increasing consternation about the correspondence between Walter Cardinal Kasper, president of the Council for Promoting Christian Unity, and Patriarch Alexei II, followed by that between the patriarch and other heads of autocephalous Orthodox churches regarding the recognition by the Holy Father of the Ukrainian Catholic Patriarchate.

Our consternation stems from the fact that although the Ukrainian Catholic Church is a church sui juris – not a daughter church, nor a church that needs a “big sister” to watch over her – but a church in her own right, that is not being treated as such by her Orthodox sister churches…"

Oh I’m sorry for the overpost, I didn’t recognize the name - but they sure sound “all het up” - okay by me - I’'m for more bishops letting loose - the old boys weren’t half so calm and cool about their faith - at least we know where they stand and I’m all for that.

Actually I’ve believed for some time now, that if we all stopped the “dancing, schmancing” around and spoke our minds, we’d be in better shape both with ourselves and with the “others”. 😛

I wouldn’t recommend pulling out the beards, nor smashing a crozier or two against another head - but I’d sure like to see a little more “life” - maybe then Christians would take their faith more seriously. IOW there are some days I tire of the waltz and would like a little breakdancing in small doses.

Benedictine Nuns Host East-West Dialogue Day
The 40th anniversary of the promulgation of Vatican’s Two’s document on ecumenism, Unitatis Redintegratio, was celebrated at St Mildrid’s Priory, Minster Abbey, in Kent on 4 October, where a Dialogue Day was held under the title ‘Healing and Reconciliation: Dialogue for the Future.’

The meeting was part of a conference, the fifth of its kind, to be hosted by the Benedictine nuns in response to Pope John Paul II’s 1996 Apostolic Letter Orientale Lumen. It brought together monks and nuns from the Roman Catholic, Orthodox and Oriental Orthodox Churches, as well as representatives of the Anglican Communion.

Fifty participants joined the nuns for the Dialogue Day. The main speakers were: Archbishop Kevin McDonald, Catholic Metropolitan of Southwark; Archbishop Youhanna Ibrahim, Oriental Orthodox Metropolitan of Aleppo, Syria; Dr Sebastian Brock of the Oriental Institute in Oxford; and Dom Hugh Gilbert OSB, Abbot of Pluscarden in Scotland.

Dr Anthony O’Mahony from Heythrop College, London, chaired the day. Archimandrite Isaias Simonopetritis represented the Greek Orthodox Archbishop Gregorios of Thyratia, while Fr Stephen Platt represented the Russian Orthodox Church. The Eastern Catholic Churches were also well represented. Fr Andrew Faley, Assistant General Secretary for Ecumenical Affairs of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of England & Wales, was one of the members of the panel.

More waltzing than breakdancing here I suspect…

I think there are a few who it might help a little out of their ossification. Hard to appear “imperial” when you’re breakdancing.,

The Ukrainians, both Orthodox and Eastern Catholic have been talking together for a long time, and have a surprisingly open rapport.

They have altogether been dialoging with the Ecumenical Patriarchate, which they regard as their mother church.

The K’yivan Church Study Group has been meeting on a regular basis and all of the hierarchs (including Basil Losten and Patriarch Bartholomew) are involved.

One of the main goals is to have a united Ukrainian church that shares open communion between both the Patriarch of Constantinople and the Papacy. These people are serious about it.

The establishment of a patriarchate for the Ukrainians will advance this goal considerably, but it will bring some fundamental changes in the ecclesiology. Moscow, Constantinople and Rome will each lose some of their prerogatives in Ukraine if this should ever happen. The issue is quite complex.
