Um, what should Catholics think of disco music?

I am not aware of any connection between disco and gay culture.

What’s with the Um at the beginning of your title?
 
I remember disco music in the late 70s and 80s. It was essentially dance music, associated with both straight and gay culture. Not great music but upbeat and part of that era, more or less over and done with in most circles, mercifully in my view.

I was a teenager in the disco era. Ever watch “Saturday Night Fever”? It’s 100% heterosexual.
And so were huge, huge numbers of people dancing to disco music.
Nobody cared if gay people were also enjoying it.
 
I’ve been to discos .

I never liked them because they played the music too loudly for my liking .

But I never detected any associations with gay culture .

I hope this thread isn’t one of those " Lets bash the gays " threads .
 
So what if it is associated with gay clubs? It’s only music.

By that token, you also wouldn’t be able to listen to the likes of any gay icons e.g Freddie Mercury, Tina Turner, Elton John, David Bowie.
 
I was a teen during the days of disco too. There was nothing gay about it. Going to dance clubs was very popular back then. Gays had there own clubs which were known as gay clubs. They probably played the same music, I don’t know. All the clubs I went to once I turned 21 were straight and they were always packed with people too.
 
Also, as a woman I’ve very much enjoyed going to gay clubs (with a gay friend) when I was younger. Better music, friendlier and no worries of any unwanted male attention.
 
Yeah, speaking of sin, I realized after I posted that that’s a younger Jimmy Savile emceeing. Guess I better say a few prayers for his soul today.

Disco was associated with “gay culture” because it was popularized by gay men and/or in gay male clubs.

But the music itself wasn’t necessarily “gay.”

This was the case in the early days of disco and in major cities like NYC, but after “Saturday Night Fever” and The Bee Gees, it became very mainstream and associated with lounge lizard straight people.

Homophobia was rampant then and most cities including my own didn’t have any sort of visible gay culture, due largely to a genuine fear of physical violence.
 
Some times I get tired of these ‘what should Catholics think about this or that’ threads, as if we need someone to tell us what to think about everything under the sun. We’re not robots you know.

Anyway to answer the question, it’s just music. You have to decide for yourself whether it’s to your taste or not. Myself, I like it a lot.

I sometimes can’t tell on here whether something is a wind-up or whether the post is for real. There are lots of things that are ‘associated with “gay culture”’. Are you also going to ask what Catholics think of musical theatre or Oscar Wilde?
