College football circles are pretty big circles, but yes, it’s safe to say that if you weren’t a college football fan, you wouldn’t have known who this guy was.
Joe Paterno was the name everybody (including outside college football) knew.
As @Tis_Bearself mentioned, if you watched or followed college football, this was massive news and quite a shocker, hit a lot of college football fans hard. I watch CF very regularly and I close family friends who are Penn State fans so it hit pretty hard.
If you don’t follow CF you wouldn’t of heard of him before his arrest, it’s not like Bill Cosby who everyone knew no matter if you watched him or not
