A message from the President of Catholic Answers

Dear Members and Patrons of the Catholic Answers Forums

On Thursday December 31 at 5pm PT, Catholic Answers will close the Catholic Answers Forums (CAF). I have made the decision to close the CAF after lengthy consultation with the Catholic Answers executive committee and board of trustees.

Because Catholic Answers has limited resources, we are always evaluating our programs to determine if they provide a good return on investment. I understand that the word “good” is interpreted subjectively. Opinions about the merits of the CAF range more widely than those concerning any of our other works. Some find them helpful, others contentious, others find them addictive, and still others find some of the content not suited to an apologetics apostolate and some of the content better suited to private spiritual direction and sacramental confession.

When we add to the inconclusive value of the forums, the significant cost in financial resources and personnel time to host, operate, and to what degree we can, govern them, Catholic Answers can no longer justify the effort. Our attempt to draw even a tenth of what they cost to operate through patronage was not successful. Some regular users of the Forums welcomed user fees. The vast majority wished to make use of the Forums for free. For our part, we need to make the best use we can of the gifts that donors to Catholic Answers give us to spread the Catholic Faith.

Recurring Patron donations will be discontinued on December 31. If you would like to continue supporting the work of Catholic Answers, you can donate here.

Thank you all for your support over the years and God bless.

Christopher Check

President, Catholic Answers

Their insistence on keeping that Category has lead to probably 90% of the suspensions seen here. Combine that with the Summer of Shame where 60% of the Forum got temporary suspensions, it’s no wonder that the place has become a wasteland.

It’s sad that it has come to this.

I think too many liberals who identify as Catholic distorting the teachings of Jesus. Someone would post a thread ‘can women be priests’ and it should be a relatively short thread with the answer ‘no’ and the reasons why but instead it would turn into 100 posts of ‘opinions’ that confuse.

Also the flagging system was not a good idea.

I think what we see happening on Facebook, Twitter,
You Tube - the censorship occurring on social media
sites could have something to do with it. So I can understand their decision. On CAF, we have been able to freely share ideas on many, but not all topics. The world is changing. Big Tech is a cloud hanging over us now.

This has been a great place to come to and meet friends and have questions answered and participate in diverse conversations. I will miss the friends who I have posted alongside. Even the ones I don’t agree with always. It was all new to be when I joined 12 years ago because I had never belonged to an online
forum.

I am grateful for CAF and I pray the resources spent here will be beneficial elsewhere.

Thanks to the President!

Ok.

I was suspended October 2018 for 1 month.

This was after being here under a different username since 2004 and never getting an infraction.

I’m Sicilian, I can have a temper. I totally lost my temper that time.

Getting suspended certainly was no fun. I have a temper too. The mute option probably saved me from permanent suspension.

I was suspended twice.

Once was for saying “Well, duh” to a person I like on here, in what I thought was a conversational tone, not meant to put anybody down, but it got me some weeks in the penalty box. That was a few years ago when we had moderation suspending about a third of the forum. A lot of them never came back and are missed because they were good posters.

Yeah. I remember Meltzerboy getting suspended for using the nickname for Richard in a post that was about someone whose name was the nickname for Richard.

And Don Ruggero getting suspended because he got upset that a nun with a PhD (I think it was nunsuch and not nunsense) got suspended for trying to explain actual Catholic teaching to somebody who was being obstreperous.
