Under such cirmscumstances, why pray for the dead?

dogma 400 With death the possibility of merit or demerit or conversion ceases. (Sent. certa.)​

What is the purpose of praying for the dead when dogma number400 above tells us that there is no possibility of merit or demerit or conversion??
 
Hi,

Those words apply to the person who has died. One cannot merit for one’s self after death. But this doesn’t prevent others from gaining merit for such souls.
