I was reading Phil 2:6-11 last night and came across this passage…

Because of this, God greatly exalted him
and bestowed on him the name
which is above every name,
that at the name of Jesus
every knee should bend,
of those in heaven and on earth and under the earth,

“under the earth” seemed out of place to me. Is it a reference to purgatory?

Gehenna. Hell.

Not that hell is *actually * under the earth. It is a symbolic use of terminology. But those in hell will bow to Jesus, too.

The whole of the universe is to woship Jesus, those in hell do not want to adore him but are compelled to nonetheless, yet 1 more agony they have to enure, being forced to love.

Perhaps not “forced to love”, but forced to face and remember their rejection of God in the person of Jesus.

Forgive me as I am no theologian. But I do not interpert this text as Gehenna or Hell. But indeed a “middle state”. The same place as the “abode of the dead”, the place where the OT saints waited for the Messiah. The same prison that held the spirits of those from Noah’s time that Jesus went to visit (1 Peter 3:19). Thefore it is indeed purgatory. Those in Purgatory do bend their knees to our Lord as they long to be closer to him in Heaven.

Those in hell CHOSE to be in hell. On their dying lips is the unforgivable sin - Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. Thus in Hell they are not forced to adore the Lord no more than they were Forced while they were on earth. But they are forced to feel the pains of eternal separation from him. The pains of their free choice.

Just my 2 cents.

Nobody said “forced to love” or “forced to adore.”

Forced to bend. When the Bible says “every knee,” it is hard to claim that it actually means “a lot of knees.”

Even Satan’s knee will bend. Satan, and all those in Hell, will realize their separation from God through being forced to acknowledge Him. It will be a very awful experience.

Those in Heaven will freely choose to bend, and in so doing take on the reflected glory of God.

Prodigal Son, thanks for the information. I guess I need to study more as I can’t yet see that.

If we interpret “every knee” as meaning absolutely ALL (the elect, the damned, the angels, satan) then must we interpret Romans 3:23 - All have sinned and are deprived of the Glory of God - as meaning absolutely All - including the Virgin Mary?

I do contend that the verses in Philippians state that ALL creation should worship (should bend their knees) Christ the Savior. But I still maintain that those choosing the abyss will forever curse God for their damnation. But those in the middle state are worshipping Jesus along with those in heaven and on the earth.

Are there any other references in scripture to “under the earth”? Is it possible that “under the earth” could mean “in the ocean”?

Interesting. But then again, does this one example call into question other Biblical absolutes, too? Surely, the “all have sinned” passage is exceptional, and not the norm?

God bless you!
