Hi all–
Please help me to understand re: plenary indulgences.
I understand that they entail the remissions of punishments “due to sin” the guilt of which has already been forgiven. What is unclear to me is whether or not this remission is of punishments due to one particular sin or due to all sins committed up to that point in life.
If the latter, is it safe to assume that every plenary indulgence given up for the benefit of the holy souls in purgatory (i.e., the heroic act of charity) results in their immediate release from that state? (Or at least whatever phase is associated with punishment rather than transformation/education/whatever you want to call it?)
