I do not like the idea of seeing my priest’s face as he is praying the Eucharistic Prayer and other associated prayers. I do not like the idea of the priest seeing me. I can’t imagine how extraordinarily difficult it must be for a priest to be put in a situation where he has to celebrate Mass facing the people, what with having to see everyone’s faces and the kids perhaps romping around and Mrs. Smith coming back from an emergency restroom visit and so on. It must be extraordinarily distracting to celebrate Mass facing the people, and for a priest to do it well must take terribly great focus. When the priest faces me it feels as if I am part of an audience and he is some man doing tricks.
It is psychologically bad for me because it is too similar the orientation of an audience to an entertainer. I do not like it and so I will not look at the priest.
