Hello,

This is my first post here. I am in a very uncomfortable situation. I have been with my fiancee for nearly 7 years. We were engaged in January. Things were fine up until just before we got engaged.

One weekend in early January she was out with some friends from work and a person, G, was out with them. G is from America and was in town to assist my fiancee and her company with inventory (he works for the parent company). While they were out, G came onto my fiancee. The story that I was told was that she was uncomfortable with it and asked him to stop. They exchanged email addresses so that he could write her to apologize. She was very upset the following week (she told me it was because she needed a break after the Christmas rush) and I booked her a flight up to see me, I am away at school. I had been planning to ask her to marry me the next month when I was home to visit but I thought this would be a good time to do it. The night before she was supposed to arrive I checked her email, she was still acting upset. I found messages to and from G. The emails made it seem like something had happened between them when they were out. She also said that she was coming to my town to visit a “friend”, and didn’t mention anything about a boyfriend. I was devastated. I cried, I paced my apartment for hours. But when she got here, I didn’t mention it. I asked her to marry me and she was genuinely happy. So were our families. I asked her what had been bothering her and she said it was because G had come onto her and it had upset her. She said that she’d never hear from him again.

I accepted this but I still had my suspicions, especially since one of the emails said something about her sending him something, and sure enough, there was a receipt from the post office in her purse. She had sent him a shirt, CD, and perfume totaling $50. When I saw her tracking a package on the internet, she had said that it was for a female friend of hers in another town. It was a blatant lie.

Things were fine after she left, but I couldn’t check her email anymore since she had changed her password. This left me a bit suspicious. She had been hoping to visit a town in the USA close to where G lives, to visit another of our friends. One of his emails to her mentioned that he would try to see if he could get to that town if she made it down. I was nervous. I asked her not to go, and I ended up buying her a ticket up to see me for the same weekend.

She came to visit again a month later and when she was getting a shower she had left her email open. There were dozens of messages to and from G. She had told me that he knew about me and about us getting engaged. But there was nothing about me in the emails. The tone of the emails made it seem like she was single. There were also emails of a sexual nature. It seemed apparent that if they were in the same city they would try to get together. I was shaking as I read the emails. I acted normally for the rest of her trip, but once she left I called a friend to explain everything. He told me to confront her about it. I also called my mother, who told me that problems needed to be talked about.

So the day after I left I called her and asked her about it. She didn’t deny that she had been talking to him, but she said it was innocent, he was just asking about our hometown, things like that. I didn’t let on how much I knew. She was angry at me for keeping it in for as long as I did. But she said that she sent him an email saying that she didn’t want him to contact her anymore. I came home a few days later for winter break and things were fine while I was home.

There’s another part to the story. After we got engaged she began sending me picture messages of herself wearing only underwear, sometimes less. She hadn’t done this before, but I didn’t really mind. She said she was sending them for me. I thought it was pretty awesome. But I was looking at another email she has and she has been sending these photos to G as well. She even sent them after our discussion a few weeks ago when she said that she wouldn’t send him any more messages. I was enraged when I saw them yesterday. Obviously I haven’t told my mother about this particular thing. Those were supposed to be private photos. I can’t believe that she has sent them to someone else. I am at my wit’s end. I told my mother last night that I was still having some trust issues. She told me to pray, and to pray for my fiancee. I pray every single day. I know that God will lead me through this but this is a very trying time. My schoolwork has suffered because of this whole ordeal and so has my state of mind. It is extremely difficult. I don’t know what else to do.

I know that she won’t see this individual, maybe ever again. He lives pretty far away from us. And she is living in a new apartment in my Grandmother’s house, so she won’t be able to have people over without someone noticing. But before this I had never had a trust issue with her. This has shattered all that. I am heartbroken. I try to live up to the teachings of the church. I pray every day. I go to mass every Sunday. I don’t drink, I try to stay away from temptations. My girlfriend and I have never had sexual intercourse. We have slept in the same bed when she comes to see me and we have done other sexual acts. She was baptized a Catholic but has not been a regular churchgoer for most of her life. I keep praying that God will get us through this but it seems difficult some days.

Is she cheating on me? Is this considered cheating? I don’t care what happened between them when he came to our town. I can get over something like that. But the fact that she has continued a relationship with him online is disheartening. It is hard being in a long-distance relationship. We are very good when we are together, but I fear that this will come back to haunt us in the future. If anyone has any comments, advice, prayers, they would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I would postpone your engagement…call it off or whatever the right term for it is. I think that you both need time to sort this out, before considering marriage with this person. She is not in a state of mind/heart to give herself to one person right now–that seems obvious. She seems to want the attention of other men–and in very inappropriate ways. (it was also inappropriate for her to send YOU pics of herself half naked as well:o ) All that being said–she needs some time to decide if she is ready to be committed to one person. I think you need time to decide if this is truly the right person and relationship for you.

Time will tell–it always has a way of doing that. I’ll keep you in my prayers, but for now–that’s my advice. I personally wouldn’t move forward into a marriage role if the other person was not ready to do the same. Just my thoughts. Prayers go out to you–I’m sorry this has happened…😦

Gerry,

Yes, this is cheating.

You have learned a lot about her character in these months-- she has taken up a relationship with another man, she has lied to you and to him, she has sent him pornographic pictures of herself and sent them to you, she does not attend Church or practice the faith.

Your post tells me a lot about your character too-- you want to practice the Faith and go to Church, you want to remain sexually pure (but yet you sleep with her and do sexual things AND think it’s “awesome” that she sent you pornographic pictures), you so desperately want someone that you would overlook ALL of these huge problems that are clear as day with your relationship. You also lack the ability to communicate with your girlfriend or confront her about this. You are sneaking around looking at emails, and even when the evidence is right there you refuse to believe it for what it is and you refuse to confront the situation. Avoiding does not solve problems.

All of this tells me that you need to do some growing up and maturing before you are ready to marry anyone at all. And, quite frankly so does this girlfriend. She has poor character and that is not something that changes easily if at all.

You are right to have trust issues. I would break up with her and find someone who shares my values, my faith, my committment to chastity, AND someone who does not flirt with other men, carry on email affairs with them, and plot to go see them.

I think you should go to some individual counseling to get to the root of why you would tolerate this situation and not end it when you first discovered her dishonesty-- I mean asking someone to get engaged who you had already discovered lieing to you is not rational behavior on your part.

You also need to go see a priest in Confession if you haven’t already for the sexual activities you have engaged in and for looking at the pictures and for breaking into your girlfriend’s email.

Thank you for your comments. We are not planning on getting married until 2010, once I am finished school. And I would not get married without resolving this situation, one way or another.

I think checking your fiancees e-mail is a deal-breaker, if the relationship is not founded on trust, there is no basis for marriage.

Drop her like a hot rock right now. You’ll be glad you did.

Gerry,

I am sorry for what you are going through, but I believe you should hold off with the engagment. Before you guys take it a step further you need to know that both of you can trust each other. Without trust there is nothing. She is acting very suspcious, and you have the right to question her. By changing her password, sending him stuff, and those pics. I don’t think so! You guys still haven’t had sex and she is sending you and this guys pics of herself nearly naked. Her body should be private, if she wants to do pics like that she should send them to you after you are married. You really have to talk with her and share your feelings and tell her your conserns. But also prepared to hear something that you might not want to hear. Well I hope that all works out.

God Bless,

Gladys

It doesn’t matter if the wedding is planned for 2 years or 20 years from now.

You need some individual counseling of your own. Why would you want to continue a relationship with someone who lies, cheats, and sneaks around? Why did you sneak around and look at her emails?

There are just layers and layers of dysfunction in this relationship. Go talk to your priest-- but I don’t think you should be calling yourself “engaged” to each other at this point.

That’s exactly what I was thinking.

Gerry,
I agree with the other post-ers. I think the handwriting is on the wall. These things WILL come back and haunt you. If you were already married, there would be ways to work it out in light of your vows, but you are not yet married, and you have the opportunity to start fresh with someone else who can be proud to be yours and yours alone.

Sounds like your families are pretty linked together, so this is going to be sticky to break it off, yet you seem to communicate OK with your family, so let them in on it and ask for their understanding as you move away from this girl. You owe it to your heart to find someone who deserves your trust; it is key to a happy marriage.

Drop her like a rock and feel good about it. You’ve just saved yourself considerable agony!

I wouldn’t feel bad at all about looking at her email. Her suspicious behavior, etc., generating sufficient concern on your part for you to do so.

You’re lucky to be able to get out at this point. Do it!

Very sorry for all this heartbreak. I think it’s clear this girl is not behaving like a woman anticipating and ready to take on the role of wife. She may be young, scared, nervous, having second thoughts. The flattering attention from this other young man may have caught her off guard and led her to question her readiness to commit. This may be too big of a commitment for someone so young and inexperienced in the world. Whatever the reason, the bottom line is she was not able to resist the temptation or come clean to you with her doubts. She is not ready to be married to you or anyone right now.

I’m sorry you are going through this. Yes, I’d call it cheating. And worse than the cheating is the repeated lying about it, always only giving you exactly what you know, and holding back everything she possibly can otherwise. That shows a likelihood to be unfaithful again, even if this particular person completely disappears from her life.

If you were married to her already, I’d tell you that you both need to do some major work, and that she’d have to do alot to win back your trust. I’d say that I’d hope your marriage could be saved, but even if this were a marriage, her attitude would present some major roadblocks.

Since you’re not married, and in fact not even close to marriage (time-wise), I would advise you to break up with her and move on. Even married couples who vow to work on infidelity often have repeats or many many issues that last far into their marriages because of the cheating. I believe that is too much to take on in a dating/engaged relationship.

It may be hard to see it now, but I believe that in the future, you will see what happened as the opportunity for you to learn the truth about your girlfriend before it was too late. It is an opportunity for you to find the real woman of your dreams, the one who will be faithful to you.

Prayers for you in this difficult time.

Dude, you dodged a bullet. Some people only find out things like this after they exchanged permanent vows. Break it off. Because if you marry her, she’ll do this to you again. The best predictor of future actions is past behavior. Annulment tribunals are full of sad stories about people who ignored just such behavior while engaged and made excuses and thought love would conquer all and went through with weddings to people who were unfit to commit.

You need to work on you. You need to be the kind of man who will attract the kind of woman who doesn’t play around. That means no sleeping in beds, no sexual activity of the “everything but” category. You have already found out that she doesn’t believe you have to be married to a man to do that with him. So of course you are suspicious she is doing things with another guy. Find a woman who is capable of self control and restraint. And be the kind of man a girl like that deserves.

Make your life right with God in the confessional and you will be surprised how clearly you begin to see things.

I personally don’t blame you for checking email. But the very need to check is a very bad sign that trust is gone and you know asking directly won’t bring an honest answer. People who are married to honest people don’t understand the need to snoop. They condemn the snooper. But those who have married dishonest people know one thing for sure: Sometimes the ONLY way you find out what you need to know about such people is by invading their much guarded privacy. Because with such people, everything is a secret and they leave you to make important decisions without the kind of information that would make an informed choice.

I’m sorry you’re finding this out now and it hurts. But not as much as continuing to torture yourself with her would hurt. Let her go.

I would be ashamed of my mother if she was like that before marriage.
Ask yourself, do you consider this lady to be the mother of your children? Will your children be proud of your decision? Are you not looking for a woman who loves you completely?

This is a diificult decision, and you have to make it, but if you make this decision to call off the engagement, it will only mean the beginning of a new life. And peace. You will indeed meet someone far worthy of you. You do not see your worth if you still stay in this relationship. She is not worthy of you; your work has suffered, your life has suffered, is this what you imagined your future wife to be? Yes she is beautiful, extremely attractive, but if the beauty passes are you looking at a pretty picture or a life of misery? It’s a hard decision I know; I’ve had to make a difficult decsion this year as regards relationships as well but you know what, I am happier now. “God I never want to stop doing your will” is what I said after I made the difficult decision because God gave me an immense peace afterwards. And a new life.

I might add that your telling your mother is a BIIIIIIG NO NO! It is none of your mother’s business and if this is the pattern you intend to follow after you are married the marriage will not last long. If I found out a fiance of mine was consulting about private problems of ours with his mother that would be the end of the engagement- period. I have been thru hellfire with my in laws and I do not recommend it to anyone!!!
