Unfinished confession

Today (Saturday), I experienced something at confession that had not happened before to me.

I normally go to confession at my regular church with my regular confessor on Saturday afternoons. Today, however, due to an afternoon obligation, I went to another church with Saturday morning confessions. (I had gone to confession once before at this church some time ago, but am not really familiar with it or its priests.)

After confessing my first sin "*, the priest said something like, “Tell me more about that”. So, I briefly expounded, and after a brief exchange (30 seconds perhaps), I was going to move on to my next sin, and I realized the priest was concluding the words of absolution, “…Through the ministry of the church, may God grant you pardon and peace. And I absolve you of your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. For your penance, say the act of contrition and look at Psalm 27. Have a nice day.” I was slightly surprised, but just exited the confessional.

Now, putting aside the matter of saying the act of contrition after the absolution, I was certainly intending on confession additional sins, and I’m certain I had neither paused for more than half a second nor given any indication that I was finished. (I doubt I had been in the confessional longer than two or three minutes.)

I believe the priest may have been concerned about moving things along (as there was a relatively long line). Additionally, he was the only confessor present, and, I believe there are usually two (or at least there were the last time I was there).

My question is not really whether I was absolved or the unconfessed sins or if they need to be repeated, as I believe that was addressed here -What do I do when a priest won’t let me finish my confession? - but I was wondering if anyone has had something like this happen? Should I have said something like. “Father, I wanted to confess a few additional sins”?*

Our priests are really overburdened. I think he just wanted to move things along, and you are absolved from all your sins if you intended to confess them. Please try not to worry. (I know, I worry, too, sometimes.)

I don’t think there’s anything wrong in saying, “Excuse me, Father, but I feel the need to confess another sin,” but don’t be surprised if the priest hurries you along.

I think you’re in the clear. I mean if you’d had the presence of mind to jump in before the absolution that’s one thing, but once that’s done you’re clear. Because intent is nine-tenths of the law. You had every intention of confessing those other sins. So since God knows this you’re off the hook. Think of it as a small pat on the back He gave you this time. He said, “Yeah, that’s ok. Go ahead. I’ll forgive the whole lot this time round while just going with the short version.”

I mean the alternative is to think that maybe the priest really has the power to absolve you. And that can’t be right. So no, you’re good.

Peace.

It would be really nice if you didn’t take this opportunity to spread doubt and heresy when the OP is in need of serious counsel.

Oh boy. Elizium, thank you so much for jumping on that. That was the exact opposite of what I was trying to say. It was a really unfortunate typo. I am so sorry you thought I said that. Here, let me fix it real quick:

I am really sorry I messed that up. But I am super glad you caught it right away.I mean imagine if you hadn’t said anything at all? I’d have thought I’d given some good advice and instead I would have just left that there. I guess that’s why we have to speak up when we see errors in what other people are saying about the church. Because sometimes those things they say might just be accidental. You taught me a lesson there. Two lessons really. The first one and also that I should proof-read more. Thanks again man. And I am really sorry SamDash. Sorry to you both. 😊

Peace.

No worries, Trident. It did seem odd to say in the context of the rest of your post.
