So I’ve learned that the unforgivable sin is seeing the works of Jesus and attributing then to the devil. A year or so ago, I saw a video with a statue of Jesus alledgedly opening its eyes. I was skeptical of this and as I looked in the comments some people attributed this to demons trying to make people idolaters. I foolishly kinda said to myself in my head “they might have a point”. Was this the unforgivable sin? Is even doubting it the unforgivable sin?

No. That can be forgiven if a person repents of the thought.

Rather, the “unforgivable sin” is refusing to seek forgiveness (or, equivalently, refusing to believe that forgiveness is possible (which leads to a person refusing to seek it))…

St Thomas Aquinas explains the unforgivable sin.

I saw that video too, I was sceptical as the camera blurred.

“Everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but the one who blasphemes against the holy Spirit will not be forgiven.” (Luke 12:10 and parallels.)

From what I’ve read, this is one of those contentious issues that have never been fully settled. To this day the theologians are still debating among themselves what, exactly, Jesus had in mind when he singled out “blasphemy against the Holy Spirit” as the unforgivable sin. However, there’s one thing you can be sure of: whatever it is, you didn’t commit it.

In blaspheming against the Holy Spirit, the person is rejecting the only means of forgiveness. That is the idea.
