Hey there.

I would like to ask if there is, according to Church Doctrine a sin which cannot be forgiven.

I am thinking of a person who used to be faithful Catholic, but turned his back on God and then furthermore commits blasphemy against God in extreme ways (becoming a Satanist and cursing God) and then regrets it. Goes to confession etc.

Can he be sure that he will ben cleansed from his sin?

CCC 1864 “Therefore I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven.” There are no limits to the mercy of God, but anyone who deliberately refuses to accept his mercy by repenting, rejects the forgiveness of his sins and the salvation offered by the Holy Spirit. Such hardness of heart can lead to final impenitence and eternal loss.

It’s not a one time event, not something said about the Holy Spirit just once. It is a hardened attitude against the Spirit’s grace. Now if you die rejecting his convincing concerning the fact that you are a sinner in need of forgiveness…well, then it becomes as it is described in one of the other Gospels as “eternal sin”. It doesn’t stop even unto death.

Jimmy Akin answers this well. Here’s the link: ewtn.com/library/ANSWERS/UNFORGIV.htm

If he was repentant…yes!

The unforgivable sin is when a person despairs of God’s mercy and doesn’t seek it.

There is no unforgivable sin. One only need to bring their sins to the priest in confession. Even very serious sins that lead to excommunication can be forgiven through confession to a bishop. God is very merciful and longs to forgive even the most grievous of sins. The devotion to the Divine Mercy is an excellent way for sinners to return to Jesus, spotless and pure as if they had just been baptized! 🙂

Glad to have seen this. I’ve heard many Protestant ministers explain this over the years and at one point as a teen I was sure I had committed this one!

Thanks, friends. :grouphug:

Yes, he will be forgiven. The only “unforgivable” sin is to not be contrite. A sin cannot be forgiven if the person is not sorry on some level.

Yes only One: Denial of God:o

WHY?
Because the universe itself exist so that ALL men can know of a superior being, which we call “God.”

And even that is conditional on not having been given an opportunity to Know of Christ. Then, in these rater rare occasions, one’s charity then becomes a critical judgment.

God is denied not because man can;t know Him. Rather denial exist so man’s inordinate self can be appeased, and one’s pride nourished.

God Bless you,

Patrick

I remember being told in Catholic School that the only unforgivable sin is suicide. No chance of asking forgiveness.

I agree with Dorothy. The only unforgivable sin is the deliberate act of denying God. Let’s say you know fully well that God exists, but you deny Him anyway. You’re committing blasphemy also because you just don’t care about God. This is why Satan committed blasphemy. Him being an angel with unchanging will, did this the moment he rejected God once.

I really can’t say that suicide is the unforgivable sin. Read this: vatican.va/archive/ENG0015/_P7Z.HTM and more specifically this:

2283 We should not despair of the eternal salvation of persons who have taken their own lives. By ways known to him alone, God can provide the opportunity for salutary repentance. the Church prays for persons who have taken their own lives.

Nanotwerp had a great response to this. I would also offer Romans 8:38-39; some translations specifically reference that not even suicide separates us from God’s love through Christ.

The fact that you worried about committing it is a good indication that you didn’t commit it.

The Only unforgivable sin is denial of God.

Your friends fate is in the bible:
Heb. 6: 1-8

"Wherefore leaving the word of the beginning of Christ, let us go on to things more perfect, not laying again the foundation of penance from dead works, and of faith towards God, Of the doctrine of baptisms, and imposition of hands, and of the resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment. And this will we do, if God permit. For it is impossible for those who were once illuminated, [Baptized] have tasted also the heavenly gift, [Catholic Holy Communion] and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, [Have been Confirmed in the Catholic Faith] Have moreover tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come, [Have been exposed to God’s necessarily singular truths] And are fallen away: to be renewed again to penance, crucifying again to themselves the Son of God, and making him a mockery. For the earth that drinketh in the rain which cometh often upon it, and bringeth forth herbs meet for them by whom it is tilled, receiveth blessing from God. [8] But that which bringeth forth thorns and briers, is reprobate, and very near unto a curse, whose end is to be burnt."

BUT the GOOD news is that if this person repents and converts back to God;s one true Church; even this sin is forgiveable:thumbsup:

God Bless you,

Patrick

If that person is truly repentant anything can be forgiven.

Our God is God of infinite mercy.
