I was under the distinct impression that all sins were forgivable. Then I read this

geocities.com/Athens/Forum/3325/unforgiven.html

And it seems there are unforgivable sins. Would you mind clarifying for me.

Thanks,
Eamon
Hello Eamon,

Are you talking about blasphemy against the Holy Spirit? It sure seems like Jesus is telling us it will not be forgiven.

**NAB2 LUK 12:9 **

But whoever denies me before others will be denied before the angels of God. "Everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but the one who blasphemes against the holy Spirit will not be forgiven.

Peace in Christ,

The Holy Father has explained that the unforgivable sin against the Holy Spirit is a sinner’s final rejection against the graces of God. A hardened sinner who is unwilling to repent cannot be forgiven, not because God refuses forgiveness, but because the sinner refuses to seek it. I wish I could find the specifif article that quotes JP, but I have looked and looked and haven’t found it. I keep running across it, but just when I need it, no luck. :o

-Edit- Aha! From the Catechism: "Therefore I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven."136 There are no limits to the mercy of God, but anyone who deliberately refuses to accept his mercy by repenting, rejects the forgiveness of his sins and the salvation offered by the Holy Spirit.137 Such hardness of heart can lead to final impenitence and eternal loss. -IV. THE GRAVITY OF SIN: MORTAL AND VENIAL SIN 1864-

And unfortunately that is a clear choice to reject God. How can it be forgiven if no forgiveness is requested?
