Greetings,

I’m starting to believe that we, humans, do not have a destiny, some sort of divine purpose, etc, as is commonly believed. We have no point in our being here, and the world will continue on, with or without us, as will our friends and families. I believe our existence is pointless, and thus, raises questions as to why we were made in the first place (assuming we were), and if so, if we’re to be nothing more than something nice to look at, like fish in a fishbowl.

Why am I so angry and certain about this? I primarily blame the media, which unfortunately, is unavoidable. When you turn on the news, all you hear of is tragedy. Young teens, pre-teens, and children being kidnapped, rapped, and murdered, before their lives ever took flight. Young people my age, in their early 20’s, killed while in college, either through accidents, or through violence, before they can ever set foot in the working world, perhaps marry, be a mother, and grandparent, etc. You hear of random killings, such as the Ft. Hood tragedy last week, which left 3 people from my community (in Chicago) dead, all young in age, one even pregnant, one two years younger than me, and graduated from high school a year after I did. That gives me real hope for my future. People tell me “oh, you’re so young…” but for all we know, I might not wake up tomorrow, or live to see 30.

You have the countless lives lost in Iraq… many people younger than me, whom died for what great crusade? You have all the small children, only visible through a microscope, aborted, without divine intervention, such a statistic of an option to “abort”.

You have weather… hurricanes that can kill thousands… floods… tornados… all the whole time, God sits there, doing absolutely nothing?

And we tell ourselves, all this is fine and natural, because “God is in control”.

That phrase, I believe, is a great way of covering up the fact that we just don’t know. Is God in control? It would seem He is away from the controls… and has been for some time.

The branch of theology you want is called “theodicy”. It’s all about asking what the heck God is doing when he allows evil and misfortune to occur.

Start with the Book of Job and the Book of Ecclesiastes. Then read all about the Crucifixion.

Beyond that, I guess there are a lot of books written about it, with a lot of good questions and a lot of bitter answers. Don’t know if you’ll find any of it acceptable to you, but it might help to know that you’re not alone in getting mad about this.

Actually, a great way of saying we just don’t know is the phrase “God doesn’t exist” and “I don’t care if He exists or not” and “It cannot be proven or disproven that He exists.” The fool says these, because in his pride he resists a god that doesn’t exist, and God resists him because of his pride. If you but knew God and didn’t believe in Him as you perceive, conjuring up an idea of a god that doesn’t exist, than you would not resist Him and He would show you Himself.

I recommend a book by Father Benedict Groeschel called Arise From Darkness.
