Anyone have any experience whith the UUC? The Knights of Columbus had a food booth at our local summer fest and they had one across the street. We have been at our location for 9 years and they have been there since before us. I walked over and asked what they believe and they gave me a hand out that states: “We uphold the search for truth. We will not be bound by a statement of belief. We do not ask anyone to subscribe to a creed. We say ours is a noncreedal religion. Ours is a free faith.” Sounds like they don’t really believe anything, because it is impossible to believe everything. Any comments?
 
The Unitarians started out as a Protestant sect that denied the trinity. The Universalists started out as a Protestant sect that denied hell. They merged sometime during the last century and ever since then have become less and less Christian. Today they aren’t even theistic. They will tell you “we welcome people who believe in God, gods, or nothing at all.” Their new leader wanted to get them to start using the word “God” again but the denomination resisted him.

I really don’t get that group. I think their main organizing principal today is not religion, per se, but social justice issues. I lived near a UU church once and they had a big bulletin board out front inviting people in to hear talks and they were all about racism, homophobia, sexism, etc. Nothing about God at all. JRR Tolkien’s wife was the daugther of Unitarian missionaries (I think she was Unitarian herself) and I laughed because I couldn’t imagine a UU proselitizing today!

I found that joke on a Unitarian Universalist Website, along with some real info about what they believe. They can’t say exactly, because they have no creed, but they can tell us their sources of truth or “inspiration”
  • Direct experience of that transcending mystery and wonder, affirmed in all cultures, which moves us to a renewal of the spirit and an openness to the forces that create and uphold life;
  • Words and deeds of prophetic women and men which challenge us to confront powers and structures of evil with justice, compassion, and the transforming power of love;

The problem with Unitarian Universalists is that they are altogether democratic in refusing to set up any religion over another. This to me is on a par with setting up no woman over another, no political system over another, no ethical sytem over another. In other words, it’s an escape from divinity by making all things divine.

The ones I know run a homeless shelter, feed the poor and do a great deal for a very small congragation of about 50. They are not lazy people, most work 90 plus hours a week helping people. They try to understand people, and I have never heard one of them bad mouth another faith, not one time. I have a Great deal of respect for them myself.

This hits the nail right on the head. My brother and sister-in-law are committed (if there is such a thing) UUs. Social justice and liberal politics are what they are all about. About the only thing they can get worked up about is George Bush and orthodox Christianity. They’re great people–affable, humanitarian to the core. But lost.

My brother sends me material fairly often. He’s baiting me, I know, but I usually fall for it and respond to what he has sent. His latest offering was his pastor’s Palm Sunday Sermon, in which she (1) trashed Gibson’s Passion, (2) fell all over herself praising The DaVince Code, and (3) practically canonized a book called Lamb.

Interesting note on their “tolerance” and “openmindedness”–This pastor admitted that she hadn’t seen The Passion and said that she didn’t intend to. Still, she did a real job of flushing it.

Is this anybody’s idea of “openmindedness?”
 
I was told their bible has blank pages and that they go door to door and some one answers they pass out blank tracts.

Open mindness lets all your brains leak out.
