Dear friends

Jesus prayed that His church would all be one, which one do you think and why, what justifies your answer either in scripture or by way of other material?

God Bless you and much love and peace to you

Hi Teresa, I believe that Jesus prayed this prayer hoping that the body of christians would be unified. I dont think he was talking about denominations in his prayer. I dont think physical churches had been in existance yet.God Bless.

I obviiously think it was the Catholic Church he was saying that he wanted unity under. I say this because this was the only church of the time. Paul speaks of the church being the pillar and ground of truth. Ignatius in about 100AD speaks of being obedient to the bishops in many of his letters. He also speaks of the eucharist being the body and blood of Christ.

In the 2nd century Irenaeus says that all the bishops should follow the bishop of Rome because of his authority. I believe this is in book 3 chapter 3 of his “against heresies”.

My view is based largely in history as you can see.

That they may be one as we are one[father and son] I living in them.John 17 vs22-23. This church Jesus was talking about was the body of Christ. Us, the temple of the living God. 👍

Jesus was talking about thousands of different denominations, all based on the same book but believing different things about Him and about his teachings? I don’t think so.

Jesus prayed that all his followers would forever be united in His Body – the Church he established for the salvation of the world. Does He have one Bride (Eph 5:25-33 et al.) or a harem?

Good Day, Teresa

I believe the “church” is one and united in him, I beleive Jesus’s prayer was effective. Some people may not understand or have an abilty to difine unity as the Lord did, but that is secondary IMHO.

Augustine – The Church is the realm of Christ, His mystical body and His bride, the Mother of Christians. He also speaks of an inner and outer church, and the difficulty of telling from appearances who are members of this true church (the "enclosed garden spring shut up, fountain sealed, the paradise with the fruit of apples) who are the elect, and belong to the “invisible fellowship of love” (as opposed to the outer, historical Catholic Church).

“Early Christian Doctrines”

But this sums it up pretty good IMHO.

Peace to u,

Bill

Good Day, Jay

You could think of it as one big denomination. websters.com

de·nom·i·na·tion
n.

  1. *]A large group of religious congregations united under a common faith and name and organized under a single administrative and legal hierarchy.
We ought to find the Church, as the head of the Church, in the Holy Scriptures, not to inquire for it in the various reports, and opinions, and deeds, and words, and visions of men. Chap 19, 427-28
Whoever dissents from the Scared Scriptures, even if they are found in all places in which the Church is designated, are not the Church. Chap 4, 395-96

Augustine; (354-430)… The unity of the Church

One common faith, one head, one single administrator, kind of fits the describtion of the word…🙂

    Hope that helps,
    Peace to u,

    Bill
