Hello, my brother got ordained into the ULC today as a joke, i am wondering if he is in a state of mortal sin for doing so.

Hi there, thought I’d give some (name removed by moderator)ut and thoughts real quick seeing as I vaguely know the founder of the ULC. He lives in Seattle and his first name is George, though I don’t know his last name off the top of my head. Owns a great pizza restaurant in South Seattle too. All around great guy, but his religious views are very new age. This, of course, extends to his church.

This church is very affirming of homosexuality, as George himself openly identifies as gay, and is a mixture of several different religions, holding the view that all religions are equally acceptable ways of worshipping God (provided that they’re nonviolent), and the “chapel” that I went to container statues of Jesus, Mary, Buddha, and Vishnu, as well as copies of several religious texts from varying religion.

Whether it is a mortal sin or not to be ordained by the ULC I cannot say, but I know I certainly wouldn’t want to be associated with it

Read about the three conditions for mortal sin. A false ordination would be grave matter, if taken seriously.

I think he should still bring it up with a priest in confession. I believe that consulting fortune tellers is still a mortal sin, even if one means it as a joke or doesn’t believe in their alleged powers. To be frank, I don’t see why this is terribly different. He is basically denying the Faith, joking or otherwise.

But we did not deny the faith or anything, we did it purely as a joke and by no means believe it is valid and were just trying to prove how stupid some of these Protestant denominations are. By we , I include myself because I was the one who filled out the very short form for him, it took me five seconds. He was going to fill it out but I took his phone since we were lagging so hard and we just caught up in the moment.

My question would be why would he tell you this? Does he boast to other people about the bad things he does? Why?

Did you give out personal information? You do know that some people do this to get that information.

I do not think my brother does bad things. He and I are devout Catholics who in no way were intending on offending God.

The validity of the ordination does not matter. Just like the fortune teller example, it does not matter whether you believe in their powers or not. An ordained minister is a leadership position charged with promoting and nurturing that particular faith. Even if I’m mistaken, your brother still joined a religion that denies the Church and is promoting a false religion. Which again, joking or not, is still serious. You both should go to confession and explain it to a priest.
